Kontact sync w Google Calendar classroom use calendar on door android phone

The reason for this post is not that one cannot, with a little effort, figure out on one's own how to sync the calendars, it is to verify to people considering purchasing an android phone that the system, if needed in that configuration, does work.

Google Calendar, presently, exports a .pdf file which is not able to be modified in a way that I need for my particular use, which is to make a calendar to post beside the doors of classrooms and laboratories to show occupancy times.

To make the actual calendar to hang beside the door I print from Kontact, although it would be easy to take the ical file to the college and print from Microsith.

The point behind this exercise is that I can have a calendar on the phone to check who and where and also to have produced it from within Kontact which is a much to be desired thing.

This will be both a bit general and a bit specific. The reason for the "general" is that Google Calendar help does not have the correct instructions for one step, if one goes to Google Calendar Help.

Google warns that the csv calendar may not properly export recurring events to google calendar.

One makes the calendar in Kontact and then using File/export/icalendar exports the calendar. It will have a generic title of "icalout" if one does not provide a name.

Open Google Calendar and, whereas the Google Calendar Help presently(and wrongly) says to go to the "arrow" at the bottom of the calendar, one goes to the left side of the calendar and down to "other calendars" and using the drop down arrow go to import calendar and follow the menu instructions to navigate to the file and import it, it is an instantaneous when done on cable I don't know about a phone line.

    As to the phone:

One will need to have, as of this writing, on an Android phone in: settings/accounts and sync/manage accounts a google account set up. There are a variety of sync settings, and I only use the calendar sync at this time, although, as I have posted elsewhere, one can, indeed sync contacts etc.

One can also sync using a tether but I find this process about as convenient as using the tether. One can also sync images from the phone and if one is doing that with a lot of images then the calendar would just follow en train.

Again, this tibit is mainly to verify to people considering purchasing an android phone that one can, indeed sync a Kontact calendar with the phone.

If a mod feels that this is a repeat of other posts and should be deleted please feel free to do so.

Re: Kontact sync w Google Calendar classroom use calendar on door android phone

I found this how-to after failing while trying to do the same.

I export my Korganiser calendar (as an iCalendar) however when I run the import on Google Calendar it fails with:

    Processed zero events.

Failed to import events: Processing error during upload.
Any ideas why this might be (sorry, there's no much to go on)?

Re: Kontact sync w Google Calendar classroom use calendar on door android phone

      Hi Quarkslot.

I'm not on a Kubu machine right now, but Google made a big change a few days ago, mainly cosmetic I think, but it may be that there is something going on there, also there are "input/output" options in both Google and the phone that were, at some time back, where sometimes there were several boxes to tick as to what was wanted, and possibly those could be either "mixed up" or "redundant"....I'll check when I'm back on a Kubu machine.

Or if someone else has the immediate answer, please post it.

        Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.

It's annoying if this is the case - if only I'd done it a few days earlier!

New Procedure android Kontact sync w Google Calendar

          Hi Quarkslot.

I must apologize for replying from a computer at work because I did not have complete information.

Things have changed somewhat with the NEW google calendar thing.

          A) I did not opt for the new calendar, although the new colours appear.
          B) the export file is "vcs/ics". (there is no other option).
          C) I synced with the phone to verify that it did, indeed, sync.
          D) I then exported the file from google calendar to the computer(it appeared in downloads).
The file path within Google Calendar is still ( calendar/other calendars/settings/export calendar/save file.
          E) set permissions to be able to open it.
I then tried to navigate to it and open it and could not "see" it from within Korganizer calendar.
          F) Soooo I tried right click! and woah!!
(I have always just navigated to it from within Kontact/calendar.)
          G) Open with; Korganizer (also for me Kword and gedit).
          H) two options: merge into existing calendar or new calendar.
          I) It would not merge into an existing calendar ( the notificatons for ALL of the items very nicely popped up on the bottom panel with a yellow warning sign and said that it was failing to import. )
          J) I tried creating a new calendar and it was created immediately.

Soooooo the present situation "seems" to me to be that:

          a) if there is anything in Korganizer calendar that is NOT on the phone. then export it to google calendar and sync with the phone.
          b) Settle in your mind that you have everything right on google calendar and the phone and with the "old" Kontact calendar
          c) then export the google calendar and make a "new" calendar
          d) ( maybe save the old one as a backup for "just in case" )

Again, I'm sorry that I was behind the curve on this but I haven't synced with the computer for a few weeks since I mainly use the phone for scheduling at work.

I did read that Google had rolled out some new changes last week but didn't follow through on them .

          Hope this helps a little.

Re: Kontact sync w Google Calendar classroom use calendar on door android phone

            Thanks again, woodsmoke.

It does seem that recent changes by Google are the cause of the problem. I have since discovered on the KDE forum that the following works (I've tried it and can confirm):

            a) export your Korganizer calendar as .ics
            b) import into Yahoo calendar
            c) export from Yahoo as .ics
            d) import into Google calendar

A bit messy but if you've only 1 calendar it's do-able, and in my case I've arrived at the right end result which is one calendar shared between my phone and Kubuntu.

sometimes the working solution is the only solution and therefore the best solution! Congrats!
