Your step by step is just what I need. Am having one problem though.

I have an IBM Thinkpad that has no OS on it. It runs Kubuntu from the Live cd just fine. However, when I put the install cd in, it says - Invalid system disk, Replace the disk, and then press any key.

I have set it to boot from cd. Have reburned the install cd. Not sure what else to do.

Any help for a linux newbie would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using that install CD on another unit/PC? It might be possible that it was a bad burned or a bad ISO download.

Re: Installing Kubuntu, step by step

Ok, I just did and both Install CD's I have don't work on any of my computers. Did I burn the wrong file? Here is the file I burned...

              Kubuntu-5.10-install-i386.iso

Am I not setting it up to boot from CD correctly? I burned it to two seperate cd's on two seperate computers. I would think one of them would be correct.

Should I try and burn it again ya think?

Re: Installing Kubuntu, step by step

Oh, you have to burn that ISO as a CD Image. I think in Nero it's "Burn CD Image." I'm not logged in Windows right now so I can't give you the exact details. I'm guessing what you basically did was to burn it as a data CD, which just basically copies the ISO file to the CD.

You mentioned you were able to run the Live CD. Did you also burn that Live CD? If you did, burn the installer ISO in the same way you burned the Live CD ISO.

Re: Installing Kubuntu, step by step

Great Job! I do have a couple of comments, though.

I think it's a good idea for new users to do a few things before they start their first install.

                          1) Get the specs for their monitor, if it is flat panel, setting it to 800x600 instead of its natural resolution will make everything blurry. They should also find the maximum horizontal and vertical frequencies that the monitor can take, so that they can enter these when configuring.

                          2) If starting with an existing windows partition they should run the command ipconfig /all in a dos console and copy down the output. A new user starting to install Kubuntu at home doesn't have a system administratator to talk to.

My other comment has to do with disk nomenclature. Many current computers come with SATA drives. These are listed as sda, sdb, etc. I remember being very confused when I found out that my hard drive was sda and my DVD drive was hda. It was backward from my first linux system (which had a SCSI CD) and different from all the systems I'd used in the last 15 years, where everything was hd(a,b,c). I think you'd have to look for a real workstation to find a SCSI drive nowadays.

I really like the document. I think it's a big help.

                              hi whoaiam55

re install guide. I have win2000 and xp64 pro installed already and free space available. what would happen if I want Grub installed on linux partition?

basically I want to keep the existing dual boot win2000-xp64 pro setup as it is now (with existing boot.ini, ntdetect and nldr where they are) AND have linux installed on the free space on an extended partition with grub installed there.

would grub be able to see the existing setup AND the linux and give me the choice of selecting either win2000/xp64 AND linux? the reasons are quite simple -if anything goes wrong on either win world or linux world the two are completely separate and the damage so to speak would be contained to only one 'world' either win or linux. I hope you see what I'm driving at.
