How to install a Creative Zen Xtra Mp3 player with mtp

Lots of people have had troubles with these because of the MTP software on them which means that Linux users have had troubles accessing them.

Note this works for my following mtp devices

    Creative Zen Xtra 30gb
    Creative Zen V Plus 4gb

It does not work for another earlier device I have (Creative Nomad Zen NX 30gb)...although this works with amarok as a normal Creative non mtp device as it still has the original software on it and also works with KzenExplorer.

    See here for history
    http://gnomad2.sourceforge.net/

I was very grateful for years for Gnomad2 which was a help but quite slow
    and here

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=199250

When I changed over to kubuntu this was one of the big pains in the rear as I could not drag and drop music like I can with other usb devices

Eventually the kind Amarok people allowed mtp support which meant you could use Amarok but it still bugged my rear end that I could not explore my device as a normal media device in /media/

So after a few troubles and help from anythingbutipod
    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=32817

I decided to embark on sorting this once and for all

So here is a brief how to for (k)ubuntu users:

Get the following packages from adept/synaptic package manager

    libmtp-doc
    mtpfs
    libmtp7
    mtp-tools

Once install there are three easy peasy steps for mounting your Creative Zen Xtra

    Fire up a terminal/konsole

sudo mkdir /media/CreativeZenXtra (replace italics with the name of what you want it calling)

    sudo chmod 775 /media/CreativeZenXtra

Now plug in your device to the pc

The next instruction mounts the device

    sudo mtpfs -o allow_other /media/CreativeZenXtra

Now you should hear and see you device kick into life with the docking starting.

If you open up konqueror and type in /media/ in the browser

There should be your device. It will take a few seconds if there is music on it to open when selected.

Go ahead and enjoy as it should be enjoyed
