Dashes in oOo (openOffice)
I am an oOo-devotee and have used it for years on three different OS. But dashes in oOo are a real pain and for some reason, the oOo developers have not seen fit to do anything about it. But Kubuntu has! Not the easy way, but far easier than inserting the correct dashes from "insert symbol". I picked up the following method from the efforts of "the Wizzard", "Jamie Jaskson" and "SmilieChris" on http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-428265.html
Their method allows n–dashes and m—dashes in oOo and other text generating programs in Kubuntu:
Open 'System settings' from K-menu
Go to 'Regional & Language'
Go to 'Keyboard layout'
Go to Xkb options (whatever that means)
Check enable Xkb options
Scroll down till you find "compose key position" and chose for instanse "right Ctrl is compose" [choosing 'right alt' will disable '@']. You could also try the "left winkey" or whatever key you never use for anything else.
(leave everything else unchecked!)
Press "apply"
Close system settings.
In oOo try the following key combinations holding down your right ctrl-key (or whatever key you picked in the above configuration):
hyphen hyphen period (--.) (This should give you –)
hyphen hypen hyphen (should give you —)
