Re: Free VMware Player on Kubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 -- Latest Stuff

dibl, are you saying, that in order to have any 'Windows-based' program (this does include the OS) working 'within' Linux...one has install them.

Via the "VMware Server" program (for single use/home user, this is the ONLY 'option' VMware provides).......or, via "Wine".

Which I having been trying to use, with no success, unitl I read your 'post' here.
(To give me a 'clue'...as to what I may be doing wrong...with Wine.)

Being a 'newbieee' to Linux (Kubuntu/Ubuntu/'take your pick' (as I have 3 versions.....Unbuntu 32-bit/Ubuntu 64-bit/Kubuntu 32-bit)...............I thought, that in using 'Wine'......this would allow me 'access'......to XP Pro (already loaded.
    It does not.
Which has puzzled me heaps...until now. (Simply because I do not know 'how-to' configure 'Wine" properly, yet. But, I am working on it. Your 'post' has explained better than most, for me.)

    I am 'tinkering/experimenting'...with all 3.....to find 'which' works BEST..on my machine (s).
    Yes, i have 2 machines.
One is a 'dedicated' Linux machine. (with Kubuntu 8.04, on an 80Gig h/drive.)
The other is my 'Dual-Boot' machine. (Xp Pro, on 250Gig h/drive.....Kubuntu 8.04, on another 250 Gig h/drive.)
Everything bar my TV-tuner card works..on this machine. (That's excluding the 'in-ability' to use my "XP Pro programs"...with Linux.)
Dibl, you may have solved my 'dilemma' for me, thanks.

Re: Free VMware Player on Kubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 -- Latest Stuff

      Welcome!

You can't "run" Win XP with wine, but you can run a lot of Windows applications with wine. But not all of them. I first tried to run my Windows genealogy application "The Master Genealogist" with wine, and spent 3 full days with the wine tech support guys trying to get it to work. It is a pig of a MS Visual FoxPro database application, and it wouldn't quite get there -- it would run, but some entry routines and reports just wouldn't work correctly. So, if you want to give your essential Windows apps a try with wine, go for it -- that might be all you have to do, in which case you can skip the Virtual Machine (VM) method.

But, if you find your application needs "real" Windows, not just wine, then what you need to do is install VirtualBox or VMware Player. Google will give you all the links you need, plus of course my incisive guidance above for VMware.

The nice thing about running Win XP in a VM on Linux, in my opinion, is your ability to skip the anti-virus and malware applications. Not that a virus won't nuke your Win XP VM -- it will. But it won't nuke your real OS, Linux -- Linux doesn't care what happens to the stuff on a VM. So you only need to reinstall on the VM, while your computer continues to function perfectly.

The way I keep the risk of viral infections to the VM to a minimum is, I do all my web browsing and e-mail activities in Linux, and use the VM only for running my Windows app. It's amazing how few viruses you get when you never open a browser or e-mail.

Just to jump in for a moment.

        This may be of help.
        http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_con..._windows_linux

I used the above to make a vmware "copy" of my win xp installation.

Got rid of all the stuff I didn't need like firewall, most apps. and made my xp very lean.

I then made a copy of that for general usage and keep the original "copy" as a back up.

I use it for all my photoshop, flash, dreamweaver stuff.
It is fast and more stable than my HD installation used to be (I ditched that one ) and only two clicks away

I can also share files between linux and xp with samba.

So, if you have questions feel free and ask.

Probably anywhere in Switzerland is pretty nice this time of year! Even Ohio is not too bad!

I have good luck with Imageshack for uploading images. On my 1600x1200 desktop, if I take a screenshot (full screen), I use gimp to do a 50% reduction, upload to Imageshack, and then use their URL tags to paste the URL into a forum post. Works reasonably well -- here's an example from yesterday:

With all the trouble that folks are having with Nvidia drivers, I'm not sure what kind of card you should get:

                    :

I "moved" to kde4 in January and now have 4/5:
                    HH kde3.5.9 / kde4.1
                    HH->Debian kde4.1
                    Intrepid alpha3
                    HH Remix kde4.1 / amarok-nightly

But I know what you mean.

I have a ATI card and I might stick with ATI especially since they seem to be making great strides in supporting linux drivers.

has anyone gotten vmware player to work again with the latest kernel update/grade in Intrepid?

                      Code:
                      sudo /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
                      does not work.

                      Code:
                      sudo ./runme.pl
                      with vmware-any-any-update117c
                      doesn't work either.

Nor the new version of player:

No go with any-any-update117c or d. I just saw the notice about a new version of VMware Player this morning -- I was going to try it tonight. I guess I'll not bother with it on the 2.6.27 kernel. I've got a 2.6.26 kernel available to boot, but the xorg.conf file has to be reconfigured every time I run it, so probably I'll just use VMware on my sidux OS (2.6.26 still) until there's a new patch for 2.6.27.

                          Check this out:
                          http://www.vmware.com/support/player..._player25.html

I am going to try this on my hardy and intrepid and will report back.

Okay, installation runs with a gui and works for HH AND II

                          Download from here:
                          http://www.vmware.com/download/player/

Open a terminal in the folder you downloaded to and do:
                          Code:
                          sudo sh VMware-Player-2.5.0-118166.i386.bundle
This is for the current version. For a later version you will to replace:
                          118166
                          accordingly.

This will uninstall any existing vmware player installation and a gui will pop up. Follow the wizard and give a few minutes.

                          Very sweet.

Assuming Kubuntu 8.10 or 9.04 (i.e. kernel 2.6.27 or 2.6.28), get the new VMWare Player 2.5.2 from the VMWare site -- get the ".bundle" file, either 32-bit or 64-bit as applicable for your system. Put a copy of it in /tmp and then run
                              Code:
                              sudo sh vm{tab to complete}
to install it. Accept the license agreement, and it will install.

Next, run it from the Kmenu>System>VMware Player menu item. Upon first running, it will compile a kernel module, or attempt to. If it throws an error (on 2.6.28), get the patch here:

                              http://communities.vmware.com/thread/203231

and install it from /tmp, following instructions. Then try running VMWare Player again.

To install Windows on the VM, follow the instructions in my original post, pertaining to installing Windows on the virtual disk drive, using a Windows installation CD, and it should work fine. Start with #3 on the OP.
