Why can't I auto-hide/ resize the panel? Can I add a new panel?

Unfortunately, configuration of the Plasma Panel via the UI didn't make it in time for the 4.0 feature-freeze, but you can bet these features will be re-instated for 4.1. Some have reported success with modifying ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc while plasma is not running, but it's best to wait until someone writes a proper guide.

That is:

Grabbing panel-background.svg from /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/

Editing it with inkscape.

Backuping orginal and inserting new panel-background.svg to the /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/.

Just a few notes:
using a different color (like dark blue) leaves all the icons (wdget backrounds) black. No way to cahge that afaik.

Second resizing it always leave a black boarder at the top of the panel. I tried H 56 and 40 and 30.

I think I'll just continue with tho old black for now
