Hi,

I am newbie - using kubuntu since 1 day, so sorry if I will mess up with writing something;-)

I was installing driver 173.14.12 for my nVIDIA geForce 7000m using method described before, and it worked!

When I had a black screen I pressed Ctrl+Alt+F1 again, and it came back to console.
Then I proceeded as was described and I have it working now.

My question is:

a) shall I follow all the rest of steps for my type of card ? (I can't see it now, but I think it was from step 3)

b) I have same annoying problem with brightness as described before. Anytime KDM starts, my laptop screen is going to highest=brightest option and literally flashing my eyes. How can I prevent this ?

c) Yesterday I had installed graphic using latest Envy, but after turning on my laptop today - it was 640x480 and no way of changing it. If I will have same problem this time after manual installation, what should I do ?

Using EnvyNG is the best method -- that's good.

I don't know how the brightness settings work for your laptop. Search Ubuntu Forums on that model of laptop and maybe someone has posted on that subject.

I can answer (c).

Do Alt-F2 and enter "kdesu nvidia-settings". This will open the nvidia-settings utility in Super User mode.

Open the "X Server Display Configuration" tab. Click the "Resolution" button and set it to your favorite resolution. Leave "Refresh" on "Auto".

Now click the "Save to X Configuration File" button in the lower right. Leave the checkmark in the "merge" box, and click "Save". Now this is the new default setting.
