    Can I plug this into a windows pc and it will boot kubuntu? -- Yes.
    Will this work using 8.04? -- Yes
    Will it mean that I can save any files I create on my USB? --Yes
    Will I then be able to bounce them across to my main kubuntu pc? --Yes
    Will it leave my windows (work ) pc kubuntu free? --Yes

    Now, if you wish, if you feel better about it, you can use it with 8.04 or 7.10--see those posts above. But my 8.04 is working fine. 8.04 with KDE 4.x is sorta being improved over time, so the 8.04 you put on the flash drive is today's 8.04. There are supposed to be ways to update your USB stick's OS, but I have not seen conclusive case analysis of that.

    The answer to all your Q's is Yes.
    You might do this with an "experiment" attitude and see how it goes.
    Most people report that if nothing else, they learn a lot of Linux/Kubuntu.

      Oh yes ...me too...but this one ( and virtual desktops actually) have eluded me.

      All those yes answers will get me looking at this next time I work from home and hopefully get it right this time ...or maybe the next.

      Maybe I should post the results up here..or would that clog this how to up ( in a how not to)?

      btw I am using kde 3.5.9 so that should be cool

        Might be best to post any issues down below in the regular forum somewhere (Installation & Booting?).

        You might want to play with usb-creator, which I am posting next, right here.

                Re your first line edit in post #64:

                Once usb-creator is installed (which is easiest on 8.10 'cos it is in the repos) it does not give a toss which iso you feed it. I have used it to make a non persistent remastered 8.04 stick.

                  usb-creator -- limitations & the big plus

                  Of course, with usb-creator, it might be difficult (but not impossible) to rig up any sort of custom booting. You'd have to set some bootloader in the MBR and point it at Syslinux. GRUB usually requires 15 sectors following the MBR, so that's a problem here since partition 1 starts at "sector 1" (following the MBR). Etcetera, etcetera.

                  Bottom-line is that my method Reply #54 is more flexible:
                  You can install more than one OS on the flash drive, dual-booting with GRUB.
                  And/or, even use a separate dedicated GRUB partition to run the show for several OSs/utilities (e.g., gparted, SGD, Puppy, Kubuntu) on your flash drive.

                  But for anyone just wanting to get their 8.10 on a stick and use it persistent, usb-creator is RDS (real damn smooth).

                      Cheers for that both of you. I might try the usb creator using 8:10 as a tester that I can use at work. I can still download it via adept even when I run the 8:10 live cd I take it.

                      Now you are on for a challenge. I will give this a try later tomorrow and stick up what goes on with usb creator ..it does sound good I admit

                        Yeah, andy, let's us know how it goes--your take on it.
                        usb-creator looks pretty handy to me, especially for anyone just wanting to get on with it and use it!
                        (I'm a little more comfortable with my GRUB-boot method, though, as I feel I have some control over the stick )

                          Well that was very very strange.
                          Booted up a live 8:10 cd
                          After a few tries at downloading usb creator using adept..it downloaded
                          I stuck in my pen drive, it recognized it. I made some space and made it persistant
                          I also went off and made a quick cup of tea&#160; ( very important this) stops you grumbling at the screen!
                          It worked.
                          I tried to reboot at home from the pen drive
                          It did not work..boot failure...can look at that later.
                          I went off the pc in a tired - I will try this again manner ( ok I swore mildy and resolved to try tomorrow
                          Which I should have done...more time etc
                          Took pen drive to work
                          Plugged it in
                          A windows pc
                          Locked /blocked etc usually
                          Found out how to get to boot menu&#160;
                          Selected source- USB
                          IT WORKED :P
                          &#160; &#160; &#160;

                          Not the fasted but it booted

                          And it let me go online for a bit...tada!

                          It finally works for me

                          I was going to post it from the kubuntu on windows through my new pen drive pc ...
                          BUT our IT system went down

                                I will have a bash at the 8:04 pen drive later as I will not be going near a work pc for a few days now so no point but will have ready to try on Monday.

                                Quick question...as I was running the live cd...I downloaded the usb creator ok?

                                So where is it?

                                Is it or was it in my ram or where?
