    Re: Build a LIVE Kubuntu Flash Drive, How-To

    There is a boot option called "persist" that allows a USB installation of a bootable ISO to have some changes made to it. I have a sidux USB stick set up this way. But I dunno about "updates" -- I do know that network settings, and browser tabs, and such can be changed and the changes remain.

      Re: Build a LIVE Kubuntu Flash Drive, How-To

      PendriveLinux.com -- a standard place to go for this stuff, but for some reason I can't recall, I didn't like their method (e.g., does it not require you to download and use some proprietary black-magic box helper function or some such?). And, I've heard others make that complaint.

      Again, I don't have time to check around, but somewhere some of us have posted notes about updating the Live flash drive, maybe even here (above). A full installation is trivial, of course, just like to an external HDD, in fact, my how-to here:
      How To Make GRUB Thumb Drive

      How to install K/Ubuntu 7.04 to an external USB hard disk drive (HDD), Reply #1
      Install Kubuntu 7.10 to a flash drive (UFD) Reply #12
      (=> basically, Just Do It!)

      I'm all for having K/Ubuntu build in an auto-USB install option to the Live CD. It would be one less thing to write how-to's about (which are fun to write), but also one fewer headache when bugs come up, assuming the devs do it right and make it go easy (as does Puppy).

        Most of these instructions are needlessly difficult. Easier instructions are at

          @ perspectoff -- maybe you'd better try each version; there's issues with pendrivelinux, which is a well-known site; Herman has yet another version, also better than pendrivelinux.

            Pendrive has not worked for me :P I downloaded their script, it didn't work and, surprise, surprise, the code was faulty. Have you actually tried it, Inspector Clouseau?

            Qqumike's how to worked a treat and now we have usb-creator.

              Re: Build a LIVE Kubuntu Flash Drive, How-To

              Yep, originally tried PenDriveLinux's method and had a time trying to get it to work. These here were, at least for me, well written. Now, what I do have to agree with QQMike is that Puppy seems to have a great handle on a good method. Just recently re-did an thumb drive with Puppy's latest and it went great! I know Ubuntu/Kubuntu have more under the hood on install, but with thumb drives being cheap with a high amount of space, I think they can and should really look into doing what Puppy has done.

                Re: Build a LIVE Kubuntu Flash Drive, How-To

                ... my method simplifies that of IntuitiveNipple;

                ... pendrivelinux -- a good place to go for some scoop, issues, technical blogs, etc., but I didn't like (among other things) having to use their magic black boxes (downloads); and then I've seen comments like toad's everywhere;

                ... will have to test this method on 8.10--am planning to try that soon as time permits;

                ... toad mentions usb-creator -- will have to look into that, too;

                ... MoonRise, ... Puppy -- a nice reminder to have a new look at that! Puppy has a lot going for it on cost (lightweight) vs benefits (capabilities, utilities);

                  Yeah, they seemed to have fixed their SAMBA issues and some annoying mount issues. Works great as a "recovery" tool for dead or dying Windows installations. Yes, I use Linux to rescue Windows files. Ironic, Huh!

                      Thanks Q! I know that took some time there. Very well written. Didn't see anything that jumped out at me. Went through the motions here.

                        Thanks MoonRise.
                        Nothing really new. Working in the KDE 4 GUI interface is a bit different. And I included the cloning and iso-work in the text. However, I DID simplify it! And that post is a complete guide.
                        But really, nothing new-new.
                        Thanks again.

                          But tell me, have you tried usb-creator yet? I know it is a point and click thingy and as such BORING! but it has worked for me. All you need is an iso. It also has a persistent feature but I haven't tried that yet.

                            toad, no, haven't tried usb-creator yet. I saw you mention that elsewhere around here. It's on my TODO list, but I forgot ... until just now!
                            I'll go get it and see wassup with it. Thanks. You'd make somebody a good wife (something I've been told because of my cooking and shopping skills, not because of my nagging).

                                I am struggling with this. ( although it is a very clear guide...)

                                A couple of yes/no questions:

                                Can I plug this into a windows pc and it will boot kubuntu?
                                Will this work using 8.04?
                                Will it mean that I can save any files I create on my USB?
                                Will I then be able to bounce them across to my main kubuntu pc?
                                Will it leave my windows (work ) pc kubuntu free?
                                Running Kubuntu Karmic Koala&nbsp; with KDE 4.3 at home<br /><br />Kubuntu user 24342<br /><br />Running Dell Inspiron 530 Dual Core 3ghz<br /><br />and also running Kubuntu on a Lenovo thinkpad using a live pen drive<br /><br />Still no Microsoft here!
