    HOWTO - IBM Lotus Symphony

I've just managed to install IBM Lotus Symphony Beta for Linux on KUBUNTU 7.04, with no problems. If anyone else wants to try out this new free offering from IBM, go to http://symphony.lotus.com/software/l...hony/home.jspa, and download the .bin file. I had to use the html download, for some reason.

The web site will tell you: "Supported Linux platforms: Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10, Redhat Enterprise Linux 5" but I haven't encountered a problem as yet.

Place it in a folder - I used /etc/lotus, which I created. Being a 'user' rather than a 'techy', I tend to start Konqueror as root, from a terminal using sudo konqueror, to carry out such actions. I moved the file, IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin, to my lotus folder, changed the permissions, again using Konqueror, so that it was executable, although a techy would tell you to use sudo chmod 755 <file name>.bin.

Next, type sudo ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux.bin and the file will be unpacked, and a new folder will have appeared called, in my case, /etc/lotus/IBM_Lotus_Symphony_Linux. Contained within is setup.bin, so I typed sudo ./setup.bin and low and behold after some time, Lotus Symphony appeared, up and running. Icons appeared in the KMenu, all applications, office folder.

My intial tries at using Symphony and printing from it, SSheet and WP, have been successful so far but I haven't yet seen an advantage over OOffice but time will tell.

If you have a more elegant way of installing this, please say. Greg

PS. I expect Symphony's future will be discussed further at http://lotussymphonyblog.com/ when this blog is up and running.

I spoke too soon. I can no longer coax Symphony into action for some reason - I just get the hour glass and a dancing A

Re: HOWTO - IBM Lotus Symphony

If anyone else is pursuing this, I can get Symphony running again (KUBUNTU - Gutsy). I needed to follow the advice at howtoforge http://www.howtoforge.com/ibm_lotus_...ny_ubuntu_7.04

After the installation finished, you'll see that the lotus folder in your home directory belongs to root. So you have to change the ownership:

      Code:
      cd /home/%yourusername%/
      sudo chown -R %yourusername%:%yourusername% lotus/
It runs slowly and only if I have no other windows open. It is based on Open Office and I have not yet seen the advantage over OOo. Greg
