Link to Sound Issues Troubleshooting Guide

Pretty good guidance for troubleshooting sound issues can be found here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

EXCEPT for Dell Latitude Laptops, D5xx and D6xx, for which you need this one:

EDIT: 18 NOV 2008 -- To gain a better understanding of how to set /etc/modprobe.d/sound for multiple or changed sound cards, read the official ALSA guidance in the compressed file /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/README.Debian.gz.

You still haven't got sound on your Gutsy install dibl?

I think I'll wait for a stable final release.

OF COURSE I've got sound on Gutsy!

But not on the -rt kernel, unfortunately -- I marked that bad boy for removal, and don't plan on trying him again until there's a released version. But sound works great on the -generic kernel -- probably better than it did in Feisty, to be honest.

C'mon -- you want to try Gutsy, don't you?

Dibl, Eriefisher, do yourselves a favor and grab a Creative Labs sound-card.
Dibl, your computer's 'specs' do not say what Sound you're using....
If it is Realtek, maybe that's why you're having problems with it.
I was (using the 'on-board version'), until I changed mine to Creative. (Creative Audigy.....and, yes, it is '64-bit compliant'. Has to to be, for Vista, too.)
            Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (w/Realtek) would work...for about 5 minutes.
            Then, nothing.
Creative Sound fires up...for everything now. (No hiccups in sight.)
Check with Linux On-line.....there are 4 Hardware Manufacturers listed as 'supportive' of Linux OS'.
Realtek is not one of them. (Though the 'rumor' has it...that they are slowly 'coming to the party'. Very very slowly, at that.)
            Creative is.

Hmmm -- I missed this. Maybe it's not too late. My D975XBX2 motherboard specs:

This Intel HDA sound system is surprisingly good, as integrated systems go. For output, I have these speakers, and it's not a bad result:

That's what's in my Desktop and Laptop. I've been very please. I have a CreativeLabs SoundBlaster Live! in my daughter's system. Can't tell the difference in quality...and trust me, I tested it. Both work Out of The Box.
