Re: How to get started with no GUI

    Hi,

Many thanks, that's great. I did as you suggested, and it all came up a treat. Screen looks great.

    Only strange that happened.

After entering "sudo nvidia-setting", the following messages came up:

    Code:
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
     Major opcode: 146
     Minor opcode: 3
     Resource id: 0x0
    Failed to open device
X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 166
     Major opcode: 146
     Minor opcode: 3
     Resource id: 0x0
    Failed to open device
    lyndon@Umshini:~$
However, the Nvidia interface opened, so I am not sure what that means.

I had already killed the -16 kernel by the time I read your edit. However, I did try and log into at first, and couldn't get to command line. I tried ctr alt F1, f2, etc, but it remained black.

Anyway, my screen seems to be up and running.

Now to fix sound, wireless, the knetworkmanager (which doesn't launch from the internet tab), and probably a few other things. Anyway, I suppose I should not pursue those matters in this thread, since it is going off topic.

I would like to thank you very much for your very generous assistance in helping me to fix this. It is nice to have Kubuntu up and running after my initial wet-behind-the-ears fumbling.

      Great!

Those errors are from xorg.conf, because it has settings for a wacom I/O device and you obviously don't have one. They are harmless, but if they annoy you too much, you can bring up /etc/X11/xorg.conf with your Kate editor in Super User mode like this:
      Code:
      kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and add "#" in front of each applicable line. So, you make the stanza entitled "Server Layout" look like this:

      Code:
      Section "ServerLayout"
      	Identifier	"Default Layout"
      	Screen "Default Screen"
      	InputDevice	"Generic Keyboard"
      	InputDevice	"Configured Mouse"
      #	InputDevice "stylus"	"SendCoreEvents"
      #	InputDevice "cursor"	"SendCoreEvents"
      #	InputDevice "eraser"	"SendCoreEvents"
and then you make the 3 stanzas that correspond to stylus, cursor, and eraser look like this:

      Code:
      #Section "InputDevice"
      #	Driver "wacom"
      #	Identifier	"stylus"
      #	Option "Device"	"/dev/wacom"
      #	Option "Type" "stylus"
      #	Option "ForceDevice"	"ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
      #EndSection

      #Section "InputDevice"
      #	Driver "wacom"
      #	Identifier	"eraser"
      #	Option "Device"	"/dev/wacom"
      #	Option "Type" "eraser"
      #	Option "ForceDevice"	"ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
      #EndSection

      #Section "InputDevice"
      #	Driver "wacom"
      #	Identifier	"cursor"
      #	Option "Device"	"/dev/wacom"
      #	Option "Type" "cursor"
      #	Option "ForceDevice"	"ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY

You save your modified file, exit Kate, restart the X server and you won't see those errors any more.

Re: How to get started with no GUI

          Hi DIBL,

Sorry to come back again, but I have picked up a kernel upgrade problem that is relevant to the GUI problem. I mentioned previously that a new kernel prevents control-alt-f1 and variants thereof from accessing the CLI mode. This still seems to be the case.

For background: I have been trying to get my wireless card working now, following advice from
          http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Configuri...r#Introduction.

Apparently that fixes the problem with my Intel card (4965 AGN). (A side note: Feisty picks up the bluetooth part of this, but not the wifi.)

The link to the repository that site gave didn't work, so I followed this to get the latest Gutsy kernel:

          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=511974

This worked, and I now have 2.6.22-14 on my machine.

However, I cannot get into the CLI to fix the screen. Just remains black. Eventually I force a reboot with two ctr-alt-deletes.

I found another forum where they were talking about this problem, but not sure if it is entirely relevant to this situation. Possibly relates to NVIDIA

          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=261946&page=2

So, rather stupidly, I went into Envy in the older kernel, and chose to remove the Nvidia driver, thinking I could then log back in again using the previous method. Didn't see that I should remove Envy also before I rebooted. So, the long story, I can't even get into CLI under the previous kernel. Looks like I cocked things up a bit now.

          Any saves for this?

          Sorry..........

Can you boot "Recovery Mode"? If so, log in, and then enter
            Code:
            sudo envy -t
and tell it to install the Nvidia driver. It should be OK.

Perfect! Thanks for your patience with the noob.

Worked for both kernels. Have the Nvidia now up and running on the 2.6.22. Looks great.

One question though: this kernel has a much slower boot-up then the previous. Is this normal? It's really slow.....

              Thanks, L

Re: How to get started with no GUI

No, there's no reason that a newer kernel should boot slower than the previous kernel. Something else has changed. Take a look at this, and check your system to see if it could be relevant:

Re: How to get started with no GUI

Perfect, thanks, that did the trick. It seems to be about what the earlier kernel provided: ~25 seconds of black screen before the NVidia logo comes up.

                  Again, greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't realize that the answer you pointed me to was right below this thread.

I wanted to mention that this worked fine for me upto the startx portion. It gave me an error but i restarted my computer and it worked. Thanks for the info. This is my first time trying to install any linux and these were great instructions, easy for a newbie to understand. Very step by step. I had a completely blank screen and tried ctrl-alt-f1 and was amazed something actually happened. Now i just need internet. Thanks again
