Can't answer the the issue with updating using your graphical package manager, but you can still update from the command line.
Open a konsole and just type:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgradeWindows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
