Customize Panel - System Tray Editng

I've been using Linux for a while now and have truly enjoyed the flexibility it provides. As such, I've always have placed my volume control in the bottom right corner, as it's normally the only part of the system tray I use. With it located in the bottom corner, I don't even have to look, to lower or raise the volume. Just a simple scroll, up or down with the mouse wheel.

This is the first time using Kubuntu. As such, I'm still learning how it does things. I'm a little confused to why there are grouped categories and extra icons? Also confused, why the system volume and network icons are under miscellaneous and not in the hardware group? Ideally I would prefer a full list of individual items, but that's just my personal preference.

So my questions:
Is there a way to edit the categories, without compiling a new panel?
And,
How would I be able to separate the volume controls, to it's own individual item?

You can add a separate volume control widget to the panel (you can then place this where you wish)...after adding the separate widget you'll probably wish to remove the widget embedded to the tray (so you don't have two of them).

A. Adding a separate volume control
1. Unlock widgets
2. Click open the panel control pane
3. Click Add widget
4. Search for "volume"
5. Drag the widget to the panel.
B. Removing the embedded widget
1. Open notification area settings
2. Unselect "Volume Control"

"Lock widgets" and the panel settings icon will hide itself. It's usually better to keep widgets locked and unlock them only when you're making changes.
