    Kubuntu not maintaining tether

Kubuntu not maintaining connection to phone, then not connecting again.
If computer is restarted with phone tethered, desktop will see connection in connection editor, but not under networks.
    Disconnect phone, reconnect, does nothing.
Clicking on "wired connection 1", allows edit and delete, but connect and disconnect are grayed.
Connection works fine on laptop, mostly sure same version of kubuntu.

How to tether phone to desktop, for more than a second?
    How to reconnect?
How to get networks to see connection?
    Any help will be grateful.

Your phone should have a "create hotspot" entry under Network. Get a wifi adapter (dirt cheap, sold at most electronic appliance stores, quite reliable) for your desktop, and...

What version of Kubuntu are you using on both PCs. Please confirm. What brand/model of mobile phone? What OS is it using?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Kubuntu 16 is very old, 2016? Time for an upgrade. On the other hand tethered hotspots are kind of tricky, low battery, low bars all contribute to bad connections. I didn't know you could connect with a cable either.

Don't immediately assume that it is the computer's OS here
There are many factors at play that effect this:
              1. the phone OS/tethering software being picky, or old, or just crappy
              2. The computer OS being old, and picky
              3. dirty/damaged port on the phone
              4. bad or poor quality cable
              5. dirty USB port on the computer
3 and 4 should not be discounted here, ad probably are the first things to look at.
Is the phone heating up while tethering?

New computer case, so dought it is USB.
have to connect to internet to download newer is, drivers.
Tether works fine on laptop, but laptop is unreliable, may lock up at any time.
                  Same cables work with laptop.
The desktop shows tether, but will not connect.

All bars on cell reception, are full.
phone battery has been between 50% to 100%.

I have no issues tethering with three different phones, the oldest being 7 years old, and none are giving me any issues so far - other than digging out my sim card adapter set so I can use data on the old one

The desktop shows connection under "connection editor", but not under "networks", so it seems to be an os issue, and not a phone issue.

Mine is the same, but the connection is working. As I am composing this while connected.
It is odd, the connection appears, I connect, but then then it disappears from the applet.

But if you really are using 16.04 (check kinfocenter) , it may be a bug in the old OS

Limited on how close phone could get to screen, while still connected to computer.
                              this is desktop.
