Looking for syntax for custom shortcut key

I thought I would be lazy and setup a one key command for an oft used command. I get the basics of how to set it up but I run into trouble when I want to insert a space or a colon ( as part of the keyboard input. Does anyone know how to input these characters?

Keep in mind it doesn't work pasting into gtk3 apps.
