[SOLVED] Problem setting up wifi network printer on Kubuntu desktop and Laptop.

Tring to setup a Brother HL-3150CDW wifi network printer on Kubuntu desktop & Laptop.

Cannot access printer by USB, lan-router, or Wifi. Worked OK on Win7.
Wiped out Win7, and did not realise how difficult it would be on Kubuntu !!
    Installed drivers from
    https://support.brother.com/g/b/down...ng=4&type3=625

Get message in printer GUI as "In use, unable to locate printer"
& "In use, waiting for printer to become available".

Cups gives strange output for lpstat

Any form of use would be good eg USB. Ideally I could use the Wifi broadcast from printer,
    which worked for Win7.

    Any thoughts ?

    Thanks

With the printer connected via USB cable, have you rebooted?

      Yes, rebooted.
      Same results.
There are 3 ways for this printer to function. So far none work.

These are new installs of Kubuntu 19.04 on Desktop and Laptop. Neither work.

      Thanks

Try https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspo...-printers.html. This is what I followed when installing my Brother.

Thanks for link, but this is what I had done in the very begining and failed, and why I came to this forum to try and find a solution.

So far, It seem to be more of a Kubuntu problem than a Brother Problem

          Thanks.

You have many printers set up by your various attempts to get it going. I would start by deleting them all.

I presume you have WiFi router. I raise this because I the normal way to connect a printer is to connect it to the local network using WiFi, or maybe via ethernet. Note that Kubuntu sees such a printer as a network printer. If you try and add it as a WiFi printer you're trying to set up a connection directly from the computer to the printer, not via a router. In the add printer dialogue, avoid the WiFi option.

I'd first get the printer connected to a router, so that it shows in the router's list of connected devices. I like to configure the router to fix the IP address of the printer; I'm not sure if that's useful these days but it once simplified things. Then if you remove all the printers in Kubuntu the Brother should appear automatically within a couple of minutes. With mine I can't get rid of it, it always comes back.

My Brother is a scanner, too, and to get that to work involved downloading and running an installation script. Finding that was difficult, but I'm away from that system for a couple of days, and my notes are with it.
            Regards, John Little

I found following the Brother instructions weren't sufficient and had to follow the extra steps detailed in the link I posted.

Had to do a re installation, after discovering I had the KDE back screen bug, that appers
                just after logging in.

Anyway went over the brother driver installation again, and again following
                instructions.

Exactly same problem for USB. In KDE printer GUI "Waiting for printer to become available",
in response post install 'test print'.

Will try Network printing method again but not hopeful, as I have 2 Kbuntus(Desktop & Laptop) not working with Brother printer, by any means.

                Thanks.

Tried the solution Snowhog posted from a post in 2014.
The mentioned Kev, did very well.

Followed using most recent version of files mentioned.

Difficulty getting the ia32-libs, but found a way.

In Cups reports as : Processing - "Unable to locate printer "lpd"."

The static network method looks a lot more complicated from manual, and have never done it before
on Kubuntu, and from Win 7, was routing via an ad-hoc mode on old Wireless router.

Not ideal but it worked. Then got it working in via direct Wifi connection, without the old Router.

Pity I cannot so far get same from Kubuntu !

                      Thanks

                        SOLVED.
                        Hope this helps somebody else.

Install the drivers as mentioned earlier in thread, to get the right PIDs made available.

Then, on the Brother HL-3150CDW on board LCD screen., Scroll with up & down arrows to:

Connect Brother printer to your Wifi router, and type in your WiFi password.

In this sequence on the physical printer keypad and LCD screen ...>.
                        [Network]
                        [WLAN]
                        [TCP-IP]
                        [IP-ADDRESS]
                        Press [OK]

On mine showed: on the LCD [192.168.000.0077*]

Which resolves in reality as 192.168.0.77 via webrowser access.

                        Then. Test Print... ;-)

                        Works !
