I thought that I'd share this so hopefully it will help someone else:
I've had a problem since changing my Ubuntu 18.04 release to Kubuntu 18.04 (did it in place, tasksel install kubuntu-desktop) where firefox would not open whenever I clicked on links from other applications.
Tried setting my "Settings" -> "Default Applications" -> "Web Browser" to Firefox, but it wouldn't stick. Close and reopen the settings and it would go back to default.
I checked "xdg-settings get default-web-browser" and it responded with "code.desktop" Nice, if I always wanted to see the code.
In a fit of "let's try anything" I installed another browser (Brave in this case) and, using the settings, selected it as my default. It stuck! I then went back and switched it to Firefox... it stuck too!!!
Now it's working as I expect it should, but not really sure of the root cause.
