Sarting kate as admin

I mistakenly installed the same PPA twice.

On loading a sources file into kate, I could not remove the repeated entry.

I started kate as admin by typing sudo kate.

After removing the line and saving, I could not open the file in kate.

On re-booting, the file opened without a problem.

My question.

Did I start kate as admin correctly (sudo kate)

no ,,,no you did not ,,,,,,if you must open a GUI app as root you do it with "kdesudo" .

but in the newer ver of dolphin and kate the developers have striped the ability to launch them as root ,,,to save us from our selves .

I am not having any difficulty using Dolphin. I assume that I do not need to take any action. Looks like I got away with it.

You didn't "get away with it", the updates haven't arrived at your release yet.

UPDATE:

I have looked at the permissions in dolphin and kate at root/usr/bin/x11/.

In both cases, ownership for user and group is root.

I believe that this is normal.

GG meant that in Kubuntu-14.04 you can still open dolphin and Kate as root with "kdesudo" ,,,the root block on the 2 have not reached you yet .

Ps. Do I need to take any action?

that is normal ,,,,,,,, however using dolphin (or any other GUI app) as root launched with "sudo" instead of "kdesudo" can change ownership of files in your user directory to root instead of <you> ,,,and that can be disastrous to you as a user ,,,,,you may get locked out of your GUI , or not be able to use your applications as you would expect.

I have had a quick look in my home directory, the folder and files are owned by me.

Presumably, if a user did get locked out they would need to login as root.

It can cause much larger problems then that though. If an application configuration file or similar has its permissions changed, that application would not be able to open unless the user was root. I've made the mistake of opening GUI apps with sudo before and it was a mess. I will only make that mistake once...it took a very long time to clean that up.
