Desktop not loading - tried everything but still just a black screen

Running 16.04. Upgraded to 16.10 Everything was working fine a few days ago and then I ran an update script:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade -y
    sudo apt-get autoremove -y
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This has never caused any issues. After rebooting, my installation has effectively broke.

    Hardware:
    • Nvidia 9400 GT running proprietary driver nvidia-current
    • AMD FX-9590
    • 16GB RAM
    • 500GB SSD

    Things I've tried:

Almost everything on this page that pertains: https://journalxtra.com/linux/desktop-recovery/the-definitive-guide-to-getting-your-linux-desktop-back/

    • Reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-full, plasma-desktop, kde-workscape
    • Restarting sddm
    • Deleting ~/.cache
    • Deleting ~/.config
    • Deleting ~/.kde
    • Deleting ~/.Xauthority
    • Deleting ~/.local/share/kscreen
    • Adding ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
    • Adding ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
    • Running sudo nvidia-xconfig
    • Reinstalling/re-configuring xserver/xorg
    • Using tasksel or just apt-get to install ubuntu-gnome-desktop (which wouldn't even load either so I removed it)

Running plasmashell & gets: "QXcbConnection: Could not connect to display"

It was originally a fresh 16.04 install from USB.

I'm at my wits end. I've tried every suggestion I could find on every forum that looked relevant and its still broken.

    What logs might be useful?

So exactly what is happening starting with a cold boot? Do you get to the Login Greeter screen?
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

It's been set to auto log in. It gets through that just fine and loads up a borderless teamviewer window and that's all I see.

I also have a cursor but the entire desktop is essentially non-existent.

TeamViewer? Are you attempting to login to your PC remotely, using TeamViewer?

Nope. TeamViewer just happens to be installed and launches on startup/login.

On that TeamViewer Window, does it show the option to Start TeamViewer with System? If so and it is enabled, uncheck it and reboot.

I ran sudo apt-get remove --purge teamviewer but nothing improves.

I can now see this however:

seems that some items are missing. Can you boot into a recovery session?

Sure. Do you mean the grub/kernel level recovery menu?

                  What then?

Yes, the kernel via the Grub entry that allows you to pick the kernel with "(recovery mode)" out beside it. Here in Maui that is through "Advanced Options" but may be different for Kubuntu, it's been a while here so I don't remember. I think it is similar.

Anyway, once in and at a console level try running
                    Code:
                    sudo dpkg --configure -a
This should fix any packages that didn't install properly on that upgrade. Once done, then do the
                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Just please note that I've had to do this before and it worked and without knowing everything that went on on the upgrade it is hard to say if it will be give it a try and let us know.

Ok done. There was no output from the dpkg command and seemingly nothing happened. Still the same issue in the image above after running those commands and rebooting.

Might be wise to take a good long look at this bug report -

                        https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...d/+bug/1576500

At the end of the bug report one person says they resolved it by reinstalling kubuntu-desktop.

                        good luck -

Unfortunately, as mentioned in the OP, I did try to do that as well as reinstalling plasma-desktop & kubuntu-full. Was pretty hopeful but it didn't work.

I'm wondering if not all the repositories are being looked at.

Does anyone know of a command line way to check the Repositories list to see if it is complete and correct?

After the initial post, I upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10 which theoretically should have reset all the repositories:

                              Code:
                              ~$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
