[KDE] Kubuntu 14.10 Login Screen has tiny illegible fonts

Ever since installing, this has been an issue.
I haven't found anything in settings to address it.

Display is through HDMI to my lcd tv.

Once logged in all is well though I think I explicitly set the DPI.

It would be nice to be able to read the login screen.

Anyone know how to approach this?

    Thanks
    KDE neon LTS 5.12

May I suggest that you install kdm and set it as your default login manager? I think doing so will fix your issue. You can then switch back to LightDM if you desire, which also may result in it being fixed.

          sure
none of the kdm results in the package manager show login manager

          sudo apt-get install kdm?

          or how to install?

also, if you don't mind, how do I then switch to it?

Yes. Run: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install kdm kde-workspace-kgreet-plugins
Because you have LightDM installed, you will be presented with the option to choose which Login manager you want as default.

It is still very small but this time it is only taking up 1/8 of the screen so the whole screen is shrunk (see attach) albeit without the cool star effect the camera made

and now to my dismay kwallet is popping up everytime i launch chrome (see attach)

You can turn off KWallet in System Settings.

I see you are using a connected TV/Monitor. It's connected via the HDMI port, yes? How does the login screen look on the native monitor?

Thank you so much for your help so far

                    I turned off kwallet.

I highly suspect this is a dpi issue. I have found when I install a fresh distro a lot of times the dpi is so small until I set it manually.
I suspect it is not set until logged thus the login screen has the screwed up dpi.

are you asking me to hook up a standard monitor?

If you have one, yes. Otherwise, go into System Settings > Display and Monitor and clicking on the orange star (Toggle primary output) and see what is available.

                        well
I went into nVidia setting and save the setting to a file createing /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Then in that file I added this option for dpi:

                        Section "Monitor"
                        # HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
                        Identifier "Monitor0"
                        Option "DPI" "96 x 96"

Then upon reboot the dpi was normal again. Phew.

Out of curiousity I went into that setting area you mentioned. The only thing the orange star does is toggle on or off, doesn't show anything. The button to it's right shows a bunch of resolutions and frequencies. Is that what you meant?

Regardless, when I try themes there are two issues:

When I install themes through "Get new themes" they don't appear in the list.
When I choose an existing theme, it doesn't look like the preview in settings.

                        but my fonts work!

KDM has been unmaintained for a while now, I'm not surprised it's starting to exhibit problems like what you're seeing as you try to obtain new themes. The default display manager for KDE is now SDDM, which you'll see in 15.04.
