    Geary

    Hi
I have the OMG Ubuntu! app on my phone and read about Geary, a new e-mail client by Yorba which presently only supports gmail.

It is intended for Gnome desktop but I thought I'd give it a shot on Kubuntu, and, it woiked!

I had to install the ppas but it then installed fine.

    a) It appears in the Internet menu system, not office.
    b) When clicked it starts........well.........IMMEDIATELY!!! , but then there is nothing else being dragged along like in Kontact.
    c) It immediately popped the gmail interactive box and after entering name and password, it then popped a requestor for a "ring". I closed that.
    d) Gmail.......IMMEDIATELY appeared with images not shown by default, videos start in Firefox.
    e) A security update was popped which I installed and a restart was requested.
    f) Started it again, and this time when the "ring" requestor started I tried the Gmail password, no joy, I did the system password and it worked, I guess, nothing happened the requestor just disappeared.
    g) restarted the app and the app immediately started.
    h) On my system, which is very stock in appearance, the theme is "gray", and very plain.
    i) There are a very few, but necessary, customization options for how mail is opened etc.

All in all, if one wants a very quick, responsive, e-mail client, think "low overhead" for only g-mail and don't need anything else this seems to be a fine app.

Yorba does have a calendar app in the works which supports "inline typing", like one types "Meeting with Gary Tuesday at 9" and it is automatically generated, but I was not able to install it from the backports.

Overall, Geary could be a very viable presence in Linuxdom, and it would probably be well supported, especially since Yorba also has the established track record of Shotwell.

If there are questions, I will be glad to answer them.

And, of course, if anyone else wants to chime in, please so do!

An update provided a setup in Geary for "Outlook" and "other".

However, it is the "old style" where one has to provide outgoing, incoming, smtp, ports etc.

The college does not provide this kind of information, but I was able to get the outgoing server which is really kinda weird and it works fine with Kmail, however, Akonadai, Kmail, don't ask for the smtp server so I don't have the information and getting what I did was like pulling teeth.

So......... Geary now does "other stuff" in addition to gmail.
