I was wondering about that, as Baloo was supposed to be an optional dependancy...that explains it's just a packaging issue (that will be addressed eventually, even though there is no easy quick fix to do that in a released version)

There is also an alternative (better) config module for baloo in the works:

With two important improvements:
1. Enable/Disable checkbox, an explicit (and much more discoverable) way to toggle Baloo on/off
2. Ability to whitelist directories for indexing (instead of the default blacklist only, which is horrible usability wise)

It seems to add directories to the ~/.kde/share/config/baloofilerc

[Basic Settings]

Those who like to tinker can add the service menu to index files&folders.



The Baloo has commands:

baloo_file_extractor
baloosearch
balooshow
baloo_file_cleaner

The File Extractor extracts the file metadata and text

Generic options:
  --help                    Show help about options
  --help-qt                 Show Qt specific options
  --help-kde                Show KDE specific options
  --help-all                Show all options
  --author                  Show author information
  -v, --version             Show version information
  --license                 Show license information
  --                        End of options

Arguments:
  url                       The URL/id of the files to be indexed

Options:
  --debug                   Print the data being indexed
  --bdata                   Print the QVariantMap in Base64 encoding

When the Baloo is running there are the qdbus options.

I've created a page over here [1] documenting all the config values. This
should cover all your use cases. Let me know if you want any more info.

The "Enabled" and "Indexing-Enabled" is a relic from the Nepomuk days when you
could switch off the indexing but still have Nepomuk running. In Baloo, only
the "Indexing-Enabled" field is respected.

Hi
This is a proposal to change the default IO scheduler on Kubuntu from
deadline to CFQ for HDD's.

== Why ? ==
File indexing on KDE depends on certain features such as IO niceness
which are only provided by CFQ and not deadline. Switching from
deadline to cfq allows baloo to make use of these features so as to
not trash the user's disk with IO reads/writes.

== How? ==
I'm planning on introducing a udev rule that will switch this out for
rotational media ( SSD users will remain unaffected ) on Monday.

alohas,

as you hopefully all are ware we are using a different IO scheduler
than the rest of the world and it makes baloo indexing block
everything else due to scheduling (also see Rohan's mail on that topic
from August).

people keep whining about crappy baloo performance on 14.04 because we
still use the deadline schedule there. so my question is how much
longer we are ok with people ****ting all over upstream for a
distribution fault we refuse to resolve?

Hey guys

There exists a repository called 'baloo-widgets' which came from
nepomuk-widgets. These widgets aren't specific to a technology but provide
certain features which use Baloo for one of the many things they do.

There still hasn't been a release of Baloo-Widgets with Qt5. I might just
release it with the next applications release.

I'm not sure if the repository for baloo-widgets should exist. Currently
these widgets - FileMetaDataWidget (Dolphin Information Panel) and
TagWidget - are only used by Dolphin. Also these widgets are nothing
specific to Baloo.

Additionally, I don't have much time/motivation to work of the widgets side
of things any more. I'm currently doing the bare minimum to maintain it. If
someone else wants to step up and take over, I would really appreciate it.
