For some reason the icon isn't coming up when there are updates. I only notice that there are some available when I'm in the software manager installing something. Is there something that I can do to make that icon start notifying me?

Verify that you have both, update-notifier-common and muon-notifier installed.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
