    [SOLVED] USB linking to devices

    {SOLVED}

been using kubuntu for many years, SUSE, Red Hat etc. have Kubuntu 12.4 and was rock solid. motherboard had hard failure so bit the bullet and got an ASUS Z87 PRo with Intel I5-4670 and a Nvidia GTX 650.

loaded Kubuntu 12.4lts from a clean DVD that I had downloaded and tested before installation, loaded onto a new harddrive bought for this purpose (1tb)

loaded and have had some strange odities since finishing. like normal for me, got most of them worked out but

.no USB device will link, except track ball, and I have switched ports and mouse works in all ports, nothing else (scanner, printer, hub, jpilot) no matter which port I use or if connected directly to usb rather than thru a hub.,
strangest thing is that they worked the first day, but then stopped (I have restored the defaults but no joy) computer and software say they can find them. and have connections, but nothing goes out. if I send something to printer it reads that it is on "Hold" but it does detect the correct printer when configuring

    this has been major issue

minor ones not even played with yet,,
. wifi will connect to internet thru router.
but ethernet wired connection will not connect, either thru router or direct wired to modem?

. and thru the Nvidia card the Monitor works fine VGA but won't work HDMI

(dmesg says everything is connected fine, can find no problems in the log files)

thanks for any ideas. has been a week of pulling my hair out and I thought I knew Linux fairly well

The first thing I would do is try a liveUSB or DVD of a newer release. Could be the mobo and it's bridges are too new for that older kernel (4.8?). USB 3.0 has been a problem for some with the older kernels.

12.4 is "supposed" to be the LTS stable version of Kubuntu.
also it worked for the first day, so I suspect I "Broke" it somehow but can't for the life of me figure out where..

I do have a live version on DVD and can boot from my DVD drive so maybe that might be worth a try, can't hurt

      thanks

Latest LTS does not mean stable nor does it mean up-to-date. LTS means it is "supported" for a longer period of time. Supported does not mean "latest-and-greatest" software and kernel versions.

"Stable" in the Linux world means "no longer being upgraded." If you want stable, install Debian Wheezy.

Kubuntu 12.04 was released almost 2 years ago. I use 12.04 for my servers, but not my desktops. It's too out-of-date for me, thus my comments re. an obviously new piece of hardware. You can stay with 12.04 and still support newer hardware by enabling the backports PPA to get newer kernels and software versions.

However, if it worked before and doesn't now that indicates an update or change you did likely caused the problems and it's not the older version anyway. I guess I missed that comment on the first read. If your mouse works on all ports, it's likely not a USB problem anyway. Seems likely you have multiple problems.

well tried the live CD with no change in the results.

I just can't figure out what I could have done that caused this.

software works fine, but can't talk to any device attached.

when I try to print something I get an "error message" but it flashes so fast I can't read it. and it doesn't show in the log. might give me a hint if I knew what it said.

          thanks

Well, if it's not working with the live CD it's not your settings. Here's the facts you're reporting:

#1: All USB devices worked fine at the initial install.
#2: All but the mouse quit soon there after.
#3: The condition persists when booting to the liveCD.

              The only logical conclusions are:

#1: You just thought/assumed everything was working, but it wasn't really.

              --or--

#2: You have a hardware failure.

The only way to tell will be to unplug every-USB-thing. Then one at a time test them for function until something stops them from working. Maybe it's a bad device/cable and it's shorting your USB subsystem. If it's not hardware, there's almost always a log file.

When the arth9k driver was giving me problems in Precise I switched to KWheezy 1.5 for about a month. It was a very nice distro. It's Linux kernel was 3.9, which contained drivers that worked well with my AR9462 chip.

#1 I printed several documents and did a test scan from my scanner,, the document is sitting in the tray of my printer and the scanned slide is in my files. so that was working

#2 I unplugged everything and tested each in my laptop and all worked fine. ??

PS can't find anything in the log file... which is interesting since the printer spool shows job "held" and when I release it "Something" flashes on screen then goes back to hold, can't read it in the micro second it is on screen and can't find the notice in log file which I had hoped would give me a hint.

Not even in the page_log? Nothing in any log about USB stuff?

At least we know it's not the peripherals. Weird. How much hard drive space do you have? I wonder if you did a new bare metal install if it would work. What about an alternate user? Try adding a user then logging is as that user and see if it's a config thing. I'm running out of sarcastic remarks and ideas...

                        lol

                        p.s. What's a "Jpilot?"

                          computers cause insanity.

. have 3tb hard drive space
. did full wipe bare metal OS install.
. hadn't gotten to alt user yet

BUT seemed to have solved the issue, so for future reference. the USB hub was feeding power back into the motherboard and for some reason this blocked the signal. removed external hub, everything now seems to work

thanks for ideas and .sarcastic ideas and remarrks (needed some levity)
