[SOLVED] missing desktop

Hello. For some reason tonight I cannot load to my desktop....i just get a grey screen. I do see the bootup splash screen and then nothing...if i wait the screen goes black and when i move the mouse back to grey. Nothing seems to work at this point.

I can get to grub and tried to boot recovery but nothing. I recently updated to 4.9 and not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Please hrlp i ned i need to log on

Can you get to a terminal? Type CTRL-ALT-F1 you should see a text login. Log in and try updating:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo service kdm restart


If you still get the black/grey screen, type CTRL-ATL-F1 again and look for any error messages. Then try:

sudo service kdm stop
startx

and report results.

Hello all,

Problem solved, I had to re-install the desktop 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop'

Why it disappeared in the first place I do not know.
