It still doesn't work (I reverted back to the defaults so as to remain 'clean'). Only Recent Addresses are searched for auto-completion.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Reinstalled the 'official' libkdepim4 libmessagecomposer4 packages and reset InitialIndexingComplete=true to false in akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc and logged out and back in. My .kde/share/config/kpimcompletionorder contains:
[CompletionWeights]
12=100
13=96
14=97
15=98
16=99
17=95

Me thinks I have to take back my answer. I just tested a new email, with my Contacts showing, and tried every address I have. All were properly found and presented for use, so I guess it is fixed.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

So it turns out that this is a good place to start:

Note that code that takes care of completion (at least inside kmail) hasn't been touched 4.9.0 -> 4.9.1sigpic

At least it works. It isn't full auto-completion however, but then the developers never claimed it would be. It 'matches' only up to the third character, but if there are multiple such matches, they are in the selection list to pick from.Windows no longer obstructs my view.
