I installed Ubuntu 10.04 and using the tasksel command changed over to Kubuntu and got rid of the "Ubuntu Desktop" selection. I then partitioned the last half of my hard drive (150GB) to store data and went to copy files over to it from my portable hard drive. During the copying, my screen will go black but with the mouse visible but will not move. Also, my Caps Lock light will flash.
I haven't had any other issues with Kubuntu installed and I've ran Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 for the greater part of a year with no troubles (at least none that I didn't personally cause). I can be on the computer for around an hour and not have this problem, but if I log in and go straight to the partition and copy files to it, it happens again.
The computer is a Toshiba laptop, but I can't give any other specs at this time because it is currently not with me. I know it had originally ran Windows 7 until it became unrepairable.
Any ideas what my problem could be and how to fix it?
