Desktop icons no longer working in KE 4.8!

    Hi!

I just installed KDE 4.8, and since then none of my desktop icons to different file locations works.

Ok, I have only myself to blame for installing this ahead of the Kubuntu 12.04 release, but I'm a curious little puppy.

Has any one noticed or found a nifty solution?

    Hi goranbr,
Don't know for sure if this has anything to do with your problem. But it may be worth looking at.

found instructions that say you should uninstall Install KDE 4.8 in Ubuntu 11.10

First icon-tasks should be removed if they have it installed via PPA.

    sudo apt-get remove plasma-widget-icon-tasks

Hope this may be of help the upgrade to 4.8 went smoothly here.

First try to recreate the file locations... if the new ones don't work test it with a new user... Allot of problems with kde on upgrade can be due to quirks in the configs, testing a new user confirms this.

        Thanks for tip!

        No luck though...

Created new user called "gijoe" and then tried to create new shortcut icons by dragging a directory to the desktop and choosing "icon".
When I click the icon it says "Could not launch <the/directory/name>!"

Thanks, but unfortunately not, my friend... I don't seem to have that package installed.

          Code:
          root@feanor [/root]
          # apt-get remove plasma-widget-icon-tasks
          Reading package lists... Done
          Building dependency tree
          Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package plasma-widget-icon-tasks

            Kludge found for temporary remedy....

Found a kludge to fix this until bug has been killed:

Right click the icon -> icon settings -> application -> command the command will be path/to/folder, change it by adding dolphin to the beginning ie: dolphin /path/to/folder

Can all you other people create a working icon by draggin a file/dir to the desktop and choosing icon?

Heh, no... think it must be a regression in kde 4.8 (running archlinux here, so not just a kubuntu problem).

Files work fine though, just not directories.

I have reported this upstream (without a paddle) :-)

                Just so you know.

Hoping for the KDE heroes to work their magic now....
