I use an older Dell Dimension 1100. I just downloaded Kubuntu 11.10 on the weekend. I am having lots of problems with the desk top. Applications do not open completely, my system has slowed down and I am also experiencing crashes. When I open something like documents, there is nowhere to minimize, maximize or close. Firefox opens and blends into the toolbar at the top. My system has enough to run this OS but I am wondering what I can do about this. 
Did some reading (which I should have done first haha) and I have disabled the effects, and I got rid of tool bar at the top of the window. Running much better!.
