    Help finding an application

I feel like a noob asking this, but here goes.
The other day I downloaded the latest Gentoo LiveDVD with KDE. As I was playing around with it, I noticed this (feature? app? widget?) that opened up a terminal at the top of my screen whenever I pressed a function button (either F8 or F12). Does anyone know the name of this feature and how I would install it in Kubuntu?

Hummm set the shortcut what a novel idea ..............currently it's still the default F12 .....witch happens to be the wierless switch unless I use the fn key ......think I;ll use that

            Re: Help finding an application

The other day I had to perform some maintenance on my wife's Windows computer and reflexively reached for F12 to get a command prompt. I suppose that means I've gone past some kind of no-return point. Oddly enough, I don't feel like looking back.
