Bottom third of screen is black

New guy here, I hope this is the correct place to post this:

I have been using the Ubuntu desktop for the last year+ and thought I would switch to the latest KDE. After installing and logging in, it looked fine until suddenly the bottom third of the desktop went black. When running apps, I can click on links, but everything is still black. The bottom panel is visible.

I switched back to Ubuntu desktop (left installed so I could switch, I've learned that lesson the hard way) and everything is fine.

Ubuntu 10.10, dual boot windows 7, Toshiba satellite laptop.

Have you tried changing desktop themes?
