kde upgrade to featureless desktop

Hi,

I have upgraded to kde 4.5.3. Now when I login, I'm taken to a blank desktop without a panel, that doesn't respond to the mouse.

Boot recovery mode. First try "Fix X", but I don't think it will help. Then do "drop to root prompt".

At the root "#" prompt:

apt-get update

apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get install --reinstall plasma-desktop

apt-get clean

shutdown now -r

and try logging in again.
