    [SOLVED] Lost 3D effects

Got a weird problem. Running Kubuntu 10.04 on a Presario V2000 (specs. on sig.). Upgraded to KDE4.5.x using the backports ppa. Everything was fine until this morning when I logged into my regular session and found that the 3D desktop effects were not working. Under the configuration window I get the message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues:", with the "enable desktop effects" box grayed out. Checking under the "All effects" tab I find that none of the effects are listed (the box is totally empty). I can still use Xrender, but whenever I try to set it to OpenGL I get the usual error about not being able to use desktop effects blah blah blah.
I have 3D acceleration. Everything 3D works (games and all that fun stuff). I'm using open source drivers, but as I stated earlier, effects worked fine up until yesterday. Anyone got any idea?
