Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?

Doesn't look like the 32-bit binaries are available yet but the 64-bit version is working fine for me so far.

edit: disregard the 32-bit thing. I had backports enabled on one machine but not the other.

Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?

Just got the 32-bit version installed on my netbook. Smaller memory footprint than RC2, my machine is using about 166mb RAM at idle.

I'm using compiz instead of kwin and an emerald theme - and akonadi is disabled but I'm impressed with the small memory footprint - once you tweak it enough it's not that much bigger than XFCE or LXDE.

Works absolutely fine here, no bugs, odd behaviour or stuff like that. Responsiveness is fine as well. It has some very nice improvements over 4.4 which I really wouldn't want to miss anymore (e.g. improved systemsettings).
I've run RC 1 and RC 2 before, and they ran pretty good already (except for the Dolphin toolbar bug, which could be easily circumvented by disabling tooltips).

No problem here. Didn't have any problems with that during the RCs either.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but I do always get to the Log In screen. Everything else seems great!
You know that Plymouth has *nothing* to do with Kde 4.5.0?
Plymouth in Lucid generally seems to be a bit wonky, not just in Kubuntu. Here's a fix:

Plymouth is fixed in Maverick, don't have any issues there.

Yes, but it worked fine under 4.4 and since going to 4.5 it doesn't so there has to be some connection as nothing else was changed. Maybe a lib file? Don't know. But it did do something to Plymouth's functionality.

            About Kaffeine

...I am also patiently waiting for the latest version of Kaffeine to be ported to Kubuntu. According to http://kaffeine.kde.org/ it was released on Mon, 05/31/2010 - 19:50. I am wondering what is causing the delay....

Thanks, I previously had 1.0 pre3 and now I have 1.0. There are a few differences and I am not sure that they are all for the best. For example, if I play a recorded m2t file it shows the start window and I can hear the audio of the recording. To get the image I have to select either Playlist or Television followed by Playback. Selecting Playback to start with does not work.

I still experience problems with Kaffeine as I often use dual monitors and when Kaffeine is running and I adjust the sound level using Kmix it stops Kaffeine and I have to restart it. I think that this is a KDE problem and not one with Kaffeine.

I wouldn't install it, yet. There were a couple of packages I couldn't upgrade or even keep no matter how hard I tried to just because of some incompatible dependencies problem.
              Multibooting: Kubuntu Noble 24.04
              Before: Jammy 22.04, Focal 20.04, Precise 12.04 Xenial 16.04 and Bionic 18.04

I've now installed on my desktop. The splash @ shutdown doesn't work there either. As of a matter of fact I t doesn't shut down on the Desktop, it just sits there. Have to either push the power button until it shuts off or CTRL-ALT-DEL to force it to reboot. Also I've noticed A LOT of theme corruption. I've tried many and they all have had some issues. This includes Desktop Themes as well as Aurorae window Decoration Themes. The "base" window Decoration themes don't seem to have the issues, just Aurorae based ones.

The splash @ shutdown doesn't work here either but it dose shutdown.

lot's of quirks ..errent x windows on some apps =(VLC,KMplayer) ......broken features =(amarok video window went 1/2 size , foler view widget lost display content on hover) ..now it's a button that wont display in most themes ...........but window grouping is working with some themes besides air.

but I still wish I had waited a wile ......or that it was as easey to downgrade back to 4.4.5 :P

and I cant find the special theme engine settings in system settings anymore?

That makes a lot of sense. So, I'll wait until 4.5.1 is released before I upgrade.

Best thing Snowhog! I'm with vinnywright. Wish I has waited but I did test this on both types of machines and I do believe it isn't really a show stopper just some "minor" annoyances.

I just tried that. Didn't really work. It had to many dependency problems for some reason. At least it let me abort instead of going ahead.
