I'd like to hear from those who have upgraded, what their observations/opinions are on whether they (now) think it was a good idea to upgrade. I've added the repository, but don't have it 'activated' yet. My KDE 4.4.5 is very stable, and stability is more important to me than the 'latest and greatest' in KDE.

Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?
I upgraded from 4.4.2 this afternoon. The upgrade went without incident. The only problem I ran into was kmail didn't start. I got the missing library error described in this thread on kde forums.
http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=89568
Following Oceanwather's tip I installed libakonadi-contact4 and libkontactinterface4 and that fixed kmail. I've been puttering around in 4.5 for maybe 5 hours now, and that's the only problem I've encountered so far.
As always, YMMV...

I'll take your commentary as good advice. I'll hold off on upgrading for awhile. Let 4.5.0 'mature' a bit, like a fine cheese, before executing the upgrade.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?
I have just added KDE 4.5 on the PC used by my wife and my first impression is that it is working well and is very responsive.
The only problem encountered so far is that the Weather Forecast widget does not work and has a red box with a black X. I also have a folder view on the desktop and when I place a cursor over a folder, there is a "+" on the upper left of the folder icon and an "up arrow" on the lower left. I am wondering if anyone knows what is the purpose of the "+" which changes to a "-" when clicked. When the "up arrow" is clicked it then shows the contents of the folder. I am a little surprised that the "up arrow" is on the lower left rather than the upper left of the folder icon. I guess that this is a case of personal preference.
I do not plan to install KDE 4.5 on my laptop until the Weather Forecast widget works as I use this often to see the weather being experienced by members of our family who are overseas. I am also patiently waiting for the latest version of Kaffeine to be ported to Kubuntu. According to http://kaffeine.kde.org/ it was released on Mon, 05/31/2010 - 19:50. I am wondering what is causing the delay.
Keep up the good work,
NoWorries
Thanks guys for all the useful tips. I have now got the Weather working. I found it rather odd that when I upgraded from 4.4.5 to 4.5, I had to do it in two stages. After completing the first update/dist-upgrade, I had errors which I fixed with
Code:sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get install -f
Code:sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
I must say it is a great improvement and I now have KDE 4.5 on all my networked computers!!!!

Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?
I installed it on my laptop a while back when it was in the "stupid unstable" state and at that point it was pretty bad. But now it's very good. I encounter almost no bugs and it has some neat new features and stuff. All-in-all I like it very much, and use it on the computers I use most, and I experience only the very rare problem. About KDE
It's idea is to release often with repeated cycles of improvement.
Rule of thumb
If you want stable don't use the .0-versions
About Kaffeine

Re: KDE 4.5.0 - upgrade now or wait?
So far KDE4.5 has been good to me.
I use yawp for weather and that is working fine, although sometimes it "forgets" weather icons (rainy, thunderstorm, etc..
I am not worried about kontact at the moment. will wait for kmail.2.0 (kde4.5.1?) and google resouces to start behaving correctly.
TB with lightning, contact sidebar and google add-ons works just fine for email, syncing calendars and contacts
KDM still does not remember user names but I know mine
@Noworries:I also have a folder view on the desktop and when I place a cursor over a folder, there is a "+" on the upper left of the folder icon and an "up arrow" on the lower left. I am wondering if anyone knows what is the purpose of the "+" which changes to a "-" when clicked.HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)

Thank you kubicle, I forgot about that one
Hmmm...on the other hand:
fintan@fintanws2:~$ sudo chown -r kdm:kdm /var/lib/kdm
[sudo] password for fintan:
chown: invalid option -- 'r'
„chown --help“ gibt weitere Informationen.

I hear you
I did it the boring way. Opened kdesudo dolphin -</var/lib/kdm and set group permissions to my user name.

There are a couple of things that seem a tad odd:
1. The key file is /var/lib/kdm/kdmsts, which needs to be rw for kdm
2. For that file, group ownership should make no difference (as it is only rw for owner, no permissions for group)
3. kdm runs under user "kdm" which probably doesn't belong to your "user group", so group ownership change to your user shouldn't have much effect
Go figure.
