    Re: Plymouth and KDE4.5 RC2

Yes, it can be uninstalled if you have issues with it. It will remove ubuntu-minimal package, but that's just a metapackage.
    Makes no difference here

I was just answering could it be removed, I didn't want to imply it would necessarily solve your boot problem...sorry for that.

Your boot problem might not related to ureadahead, it could be just the last message the system outputs on the console (according to comment #5 on thew bug report the exit code is normal for ureadahead).

You could try booting without the "quiet" option, this will spew a bit more output on the console, some of which could be useful.

Thanks kubicle I'll give it a try not so much to resolve Plymouth issues but to see if Preload will work again. I'm more interested using memory for my favorite apps opening quickly then boot times.

I'd seen this in synaptic and that was why I hesitated to.
ureadahead requires a kernel patch included in the Ubuntu kernel.
Might be the kernel patch mentioned that interferes with Preload we'll see I guess.

Edit: I removed ureadahead and installed Preload but it still fails to work so its on the back burner again. No big deal to reinstall ureadahead again and blazing fast boots again. Sure would like to be able to use both. Preload was good to me on Mepis for a long time.

Just to add but I've had boot issues/Plymouth issues from day 1 of 10.04. Although produces, sometimes, a nice Splash it seems very unpolished. I haven't even gone past KDE 4.4.4 and have issues so it seems that it is more a Plymouth thing than a KDE one. I could say more but it would be more of whining if I do.

Removing splash resolved the long (or no) booting issue, it also gave me my plymouth back, at least fpor the last 5-10 seconds.

If your Plymouth isn't working properly, you can also take a look at this:
              [Lucid][Ubuntu 10.04] High resolution Plymouth

              [Problems/Symptoms/Why-Are-You-Here]
              Plymouth splash screen…
              • is in low res mode.
              • has corrupted graphic
              • is decent but can’t switch to virtual terminal or VT is horribly in low res mode
              • is decent but the splash screen only appears for a brief 1-2 second ( you are missing the dots moving :P ), before that you only see a black/blank screen
Resolution doesn't have to be 1366x768, you can pick something else. You'll probably have to use a 4:3 mode though, as most vga cards don't have vesa support for widescreen modes, and the mode must not be higher than your native resolution.

Yuri, I just got around to try that link out, just too much real work.

                Anyway, doing:
                Code:
                sudo update-initramfs -u
                gives:
                fintan@fintanws2:~$ sudo update-initramfs -u
                update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-24-generic
                .: 6: Can't open /scripts/casper-functions
Had a look around and found this:

                Quote:
                Alrighty I resolved the problem.

                *Drum roll*

The Canonical-Census package is the problem here. I uninstalled it and resolved the problem. Big bug if you ask me.
Did that and seems it worked so much for canonical-census :P Will report a bug when I get around to it.
