Kubuntu Desktop Failed To Load

Going from 64-bit Kubuntu to 32-bit Ubuntu Server w/Kubuntu desktop load on top. 1st boot try ended up with no grub menu and with a blank screen except for blinking cursor. Modified grub options to get a grub menu but still desktop does not load. Choosing Recovery mode gets me back to the Server $prompt. From there, logging on and typing "startx" brings up the desktop and everything works fine.

Can someone give me a link or explain how grub loads desktops. Server is 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04 on Intel DP55KG MB (64-bit) w/Nvidia 9800gtx video. I need to know the mechanics. I found this thread but need more detail -

The thread at UFO that you referenced is out of date and completely irrelevant to your present problem. (*)buntu now uses grub2!
