Is it possible to downgrade from kde 4.5 beta back to 4.4 without having to reinstall kubuntu?

Maybe. I haven't tried this and hope somebody hollers if I'm all wet but I think ppa-purge might help you.

ppa-purge will reset all packages from a PPA to the standard
    versions released for your distribution.

    Options:
-p [ppa] Name of the PPA to be reset (default: ppa)
-s [host] Repository server (default: ppa.launchpad.net)
    -h Display this help text

    Example usage commands:
    sudo ppa-purge xorg-edgers
    will remove https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

    sudo ppa-purge -p xorg-testing sarvatt
    will remove https://launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/xorg-testing

    sudo ppa-purge ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
    will remove https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates

Thanks for your answer... unfortunately I can't try your solution since I already reinstalled Kubuntu... the all too frequent crashes were driving me nuts.
At least I hope this will help others that might have tried out 4.5 and wish to return to 4.4.

I have the same question! But when I try the ppa-purge it responds with "sudo: ppa-purge: command not found". And when I try to install it, I am told that the package is not found. So what do I do? I really don't want to re-install. Thanks!

Thanks, thats good to know that it does exist lol. But after a post on the KDE forums I found that it would be more trouble to downgrade than to just live with the beta. Thanks anyway though!

Not sure which would be easier. I do know I really need to break myself of the habit of staying on the bleeding edge - if it's new and shiny and has a higher revision number than what I have now I'm way too tempted to install it

I'm exactly the same way. I was upgraded to 10.04 for a month before the final release lol.

I'm tempted to jump on the 4.5 train for the same reasons mentioned 8) How stable is the 4.5 RC ?

                  http://www.kde.org/announcements/announce-4.5-rc1.php

A special focus of this release cycle is the stability of the software delivered with KDE SC 4.5. While there are many exciting new features, developers have spent considerable amounts of time finishing off features and polishing those that haven't come to full bloom yet.
Edit; couldn't wait for a reply - looks great so far, not a single desktop crash *knock on wood* and I really like the KinfoCenter

EDIT2; Seems there is a bug with the blur effect - too bad I didn't locate that before I tried 3 other Nvidia drivers

I couldn't wait either. Upgraded a couple of weeks ago. I think it's a significant improvement. Congratulations to the developers; it seems pretty stable already.

The only "problem" I seem to have is Dolphin crashes apparently randomly occasionally. Konqueror (in file manager mode) also crashes now and again - but Krusader seems solid. But this is a price worth paying (for me, at least).

Only had a Dolphin crash so far, otherwise things are fine. Congrats to the developers

Re: Downgrade from KDE 4.5 beta 1 to KDE 4.4

I encountered with problems when trying to upgrade from KDE 4.4.5 to 4.5.0. KDE didn't want to upgrade completely because of wrong dependencies.
I decided to downgrade back to 4.4.5.
The solution I found removes 4.5 completely. That's it:
                          1. remove ppa kde backport from repository. I used Synaptic package manager for.
                          2. in konsole type: sudo apt-get remove kde*
At least, in my system it removed everything related to KDE!
                          3. Add this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
                          from https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/ppa.
This KDE repo contains lastest stable and dependency correct KDE 4.4.5.
                          4. sudo aptitude full-upgrade.
After that I got KDE 4.4.5
                          5. I still got problems with workspace widget. To fix it I went to .kde folder in /home, and found following files there:
                          plasma-desktop-appletsrc
                          plasma-desktoprc
                          plasmarc
                          plasma-appletsrc
I deleted them and rebooted immediately.
After that I get 100% working KDE 4.4.5.

Interesting approach. Things on my systems are finally "correcting" themselves. So I'm leaving KDE 4.5, but interesting approach to downgrading.

I'm still just going to wait until KDE 4.5.1 (or later) is released before I consider upgrading.
