KDE 4.5 Beta 1 first impressions

On my 10.04 test partition I wanted to test Qt4.7:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/news/qt-4.7

But decided to get the whole story so I upgraded to KDE4.5.

    E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kdegraphics-libs-data_4%3a4.4.80-0ubuntu1~lucid1~ppa1_all.deb: Versuche, »/usr/share/kde4/apps/libkexiv2/data/topicset.iptc-subjectcode.xml« zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket libkexiv2-8 4
    then did this:
    power1@fintanws3:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
    [sudo] password for power1:
dpkg: Abhängigkeitsprobleme verhindern Konfiguration von libkdcraw8:
    libkdcraw8 hängt ab von kdegraphics-libs-data (>= 4:4.4.80-0ubuntu1~lucid1~ppa1); aber:
    Paket kdegraphics-libs-data ist nicht installiert.
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von libkdcraw8 (--configure):
    Abhängigkeitsprobleme - lasse es unkonfiguriert
dpkg: Abhängigkeitsprobleme verhindern Konfiguration von kdegraphics-strigi-plugins:

Paket libkdcraw8 ist noch nicht konfiguriert.
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von kdegraphics-strigi-plugins (--configure):

dpkg: Abhängigkeitsprobleme verhindern Konfiguration von libkipi7:
    libkipi7 hängt ab von kdegraphics-libs-data (>= 4:4.4.80-0ubuntu1~lucid1~ppa1); aber:

Fehler traten auf beim Bearbeiten von:
    libkdcraw8
    kdegraphics-strigi-plugins
    libkipi7
    gwenview
    A
    Code:
    sudp apt-get install -f
    fixed that:

    power1@fintanws3:~$ kde4-config --version
    Qt: 4.7.0
    KDE Development Platform: 4.4.80 (KDE 4.4.80 (KDE 4.5 Beta1))
    kde4-config: 1.0
    power1@fintanws3:~$
Gwenview seems to be working nicely.

    First impressions:
    QT4.7:
very fast, snappy and responsive on this old desktop.

    Haven't tried kwin effects yet

    KDE4.5:
sytsem settings overhauled with some neat features and better layout.
    - harddrive / partition mount / unmount / auto mount (like we used to have in kde3.x.x)
    - login manager not usable (no sudo)

    Login:
    - KDM does not remember username

    Desktop:
    - fast and "liquid" feeling
    - sys tray widgets look good and clean
    - quick folder access widget crashes plasma
    - network manager in sys tray not showing connection
    - adding lancelot to the panel gives klauncher
    - Klipper does not minimize to sys tray when opened

    Kontact will not open.

    Thats all for now

    Edit:
running kontact from terminal gave me this:
    power1@fintanws3:~$ kontact
kontact: error while loading shared libraries: libkontactinterface.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    power1@fintanws3:~$
    Installed libkontactinterface

    then:
    power1@fintanws3:~$ kontact
kontact: error while loading shared libraries: libakonadi-contact.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    power1@fintanws3:~$
    Installed libakonadi-contact

    then:
    power1@fintanws3:~$ kontact
kontact: error while loading shared libraries: libakonadi-contact.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    power1@fintanws3:~$ kontact
kontact: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libkontactprivate.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZN9KSettings10Dispatcher17registerComponentERK14K ComponentDataP7QObjectPKc
<unknown program name>(1893)/: Communication problem with "kontact" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "
    Edit2:
Ark from the context menu takes ages (you have to start ark by clicking a compressed file to get it going)

Tabbed windows still only works in oxygin

Kwin effects are fast on this old chip and kwin gives a notice which effects are disabled

Those were the first things I noticed....

I have a bad habit of unconsciously clicking the Quick Folder Access Widget, so Plasma crashes a lot

Just a few more to add though:

      Amarok:
      phil@PhOeNiXbOx:~$ amarok
amarok: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libamaroklib.so.1: undefined symbol: _ZN15KPluginSelector16staticMetaObjectE
KPackageKit (standalone.... works via System Settings integration):
      phil@PhOeNiXbOx:~$ kpackagekit
kpackagekit: symbol lookup error: kpackagekit: undefined symbol: _ZN13KCMultiDialog16staticMetaObjectE

Haven't had the time to figure out a resolution for them yet... but if I have time later today I'll post back

NO it is not "official" yet but.......

        When you go here:
        http://www.kubuntu.org/news/qt-4.7

you will be pointed to the experimental ppa's:
        https://edge.launchpad.net/~kubuntu-...e/experimental

have a look at the packages in the ppa.

        Get the ppa:
        Code:
        sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/experimental
If you open synaptic and refrech then fins upgradable you will see all the KDE 4.4.80 stuff.

Do this on a test machine. Still a bit buggy (see above)

        Hope that helps

I gave it a couple symbols of my own when it didn't work

I am thinking that Amarok 2.3.1 beta1 is currently available, and that might fix the problem... so I will give that a shot. I would like to get Kontact working again as well.... that should keep me out of trouble for a little bit anyway

I don't use kpackagekit and can live without amarok (for now) but yes kontact would be nice to have back

KDE folder preview on desktop seems to be disabled as well

I meant I gave it a select finger or two and some choice words :P

I usually only use PackageKit if I'm not sure what I'm looking for... but even then it's a pain. I'm not too concerned about it not working.

Yes, by default it seems to have kicked out the desktop view settings (and all widgets that were set for that matter).... you just need to put it back with "add widget -> folder view" context menu.

Also, I just finished installing 2.3.1 beta 1 of Amarok and it has the same problem. Seems there are some old and/or missing libraries.

              Cheers

I know and did that, but the folder previews (when you mouse over a folder in folder view) are gone.
                at least they are here.

                  Ah, sorry I misunderstood.

It seems they've changed the behaviour of that a bit. When you hover over a folder in the view there is now an arrow icon (upward pointing) below the + icon.... if you click on that you can navigate through your folder previews as normal.

I would suspect some people were complaining about the previews getting in the way? Not sure.

                  Cheers

I didn't see that. I'll have to go back and check

                    Edit:
                    Nope, no arrowshere

                      Hmmm....
                      Should look something like this:

No, but if I click below the + sign (no arrow ) I get the preview pane

                          Fintan:

I think I've figured it out.... I'm using the "Air" Plasma/Desktop theme.... is it possible that you're using a different one?
I switched my theme to Oxygen and the arrow icons are absent, but if you click where they should be it works.

I have a funny feeling that this feature is in the same state as the 'tabbed windows' where some themes support it fine, others not so much.

Makes sense. I switched to oxygen. I thought as much but was to lazy.

I'll check it out though just to make sure.

Edit: yep that is the solution
