Kubuntu Netbook 10.04 - Windows default to maximized?

Hi everyone. I'm running Kubuntu Netbook 10.04. I love it! My only problem with it is the default window behavior. They all open maximized. This is annoying (in my opinion) for apps like Kopete or the Firefox Downloads box and other dialog boxes.

I can't find how to change this behavior. A google search revealed a number of people having the same issue with Ubuntu Netbook Remix (although I never had that problem). The solution there was to uninstall (or change a setting of) a package called Maximus. However, it doesn't seem that it comes with Kubuntu, so that's not helpful here.

Any suggestions?

I removed plasma-netbook and kubuntu-netbook-default-settings and installed kubuntu-desktop as outlined in this thread -

I went ahead and just did a fresh install of Kubuntu desktop. I played around with customizing the desktop and ended up with a pretty nice, usable interface. The only problem now is dialog boxes that are too big, vertically, to fit on the screen. Any suggestions to fix this?

It's too bad that Kubuntu Netbook doesn't seem ready yet. I really liked the interface. Fortunately, KDE is so easily customizable that you can get it to do pretty much anything you want!

Change the default font size

I haven't had any problem with KDE applications but occasionally do with GTK apps.

In fact Kubuntu Netbook Remix is pretty flexible and stable, and windows behaviour can be configured according to your taste too.

If you don't want KDE windows (in Kubuntu netbook remix 10.4 with KDE 4.4+) to be maximized by default, just go into "System Settings->Window Behaviour->Window Behaviour" and select the "Advanded" tab. There you can change window behaviour. Change windows placement from "Maximized" to "Centered" (this is best option, IMHO) or "Smart". This will solve your problem.

Good effort, but, well umm, no, this did not fully solve my problem; I tried both smart and centered and many windows are NOT affected by the changes. For example, the KDE System settings window remains maximized when launched, the Kopete chat window is maximized, Dolphin launches as maximized, etc. When these windows are maximized, the buttons to restore normal sizes are unavailable, and thus the window remains maximized due to the dimensions persisting.

Personally, I would appreciate knowing which package(s) are modifying the KDE user interface in regards the maximizations, so I can launch it/them and set my OWN preferences and not need to REMOVE whole packages just to regain fine grained control over the user interface. I suppose I could just install normal Kubuntu, but I'd like to believe that a full netbook iteration of a distro would include optimizations for the Atom n270 processor (used in my netbook), optimizations for the reduced screen dimensions (used in my netbook), etcetera. Thus, I'd PREFER to leave the netbook remix suite as intact as possible, and PREFER to make my own fine grained selections for such functions as 'never maximize', 'do not maximize when window touches screen top' and so forth (such changes to the basic KDE settings SHOULD be found within a tools settings or configuration windows). Can you really blame us? For example, seeing a full screen window for a single word sent as a chat message is a bit extreme.

the best way i have found on my netbook is to drop the font size to ~8 or 6 depending on the text, using the desktop plasma. create 2 desktops. one for my browser where firefox Always starts up fullscreened. (for dl box FF options and open as a tab, need download manager tweak for that i think). the "Special Window setting" in kwin is very useful also for forcing a window to be displayed how ever you would like it to be. to get the special window setting click on the windows icon -> advanced-> special window settings. some of the programs may have settings to keep them maximized.

I don't know how familiar you are with KDE, so please let me sum up: The package responsible for windows settings and behaviour on both desktop and netbook version is called KWin. The settings panels of KWin can be accessed mainly through System Settings->Windows Behaviour module.

Windows are, in plasma-netbook, as you know, maximized by default. But in normal case you should be able to restore them to their normal state by using the "Current Application Control" plasmoid on the netbook panel (the one that displays window title and close button). On that plasmoid there should be a normalize/maximize button as well (looks like a rectangle/window). If you click on normalize/maximize button, window will either maximize or return to its original state (not maximized, has borders, etc.). Setting placement to "smart" will make this behaviour persistent. (If there isn't any problem with your netbook installation)

By the way, if somehow this does not work, you can edit ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc file with Kate (Text Editor) and set

BorderlessMaximizedWindows=true

key to

BorderlessMaximizedWindows=false

This should work.

If you don't see the results immediately, open Konsole (terminal) and type:

kwin --replace

This command will restart kde window manager.

Such items were present at one time after first installation of Kubuntu, but were missing when I posted (I believe I uninstalled or defeated it in hopes of correcting the default maximizations). Your instructions for the rc file would likely have been sufficient for my needs at that time, but I was really trying to make a different point, because I had already decided to remove that installation. My point should have been that the installed version of KDE has so many plasmoids and applets with obscure locations and yet more obscure names, each hosting only some of the UI adjustments needed to restore familiar functionality... functionality which likely only a few users sought (again, I am a netbook owner, I had been discussing the netbook OS installed on my netbook, these tweaks weren't desirable to me), and certainly more thinking is needed regarding how to present these settings. I'd have suggested them to all be presented as a netbook specific group under the System Settings. In any event, I tired of having a UI that defied my reconfiguration efforts, thus I have removed the netbook installation and installed basic Kubuntu 10.04 LTS.
