Can't input special characters in KDE 4.4

Is it just me or did the special characters stop working in 4.4? Moved to KDE 4.4 with help of the ppa repo, and among some of the odd quirks I have been noticing is that I'm now unable to input any special characters (I don't use them that often so it took me a while to notice). CTRL + ALT + U + CODE no longer works and instead have to resort to copying from kcharselect. Did something go wrong with my upgrade or is anyone else experiencing this?

Yeah, that's what I meant :P. Weird, rebooted and now it works fine except in OpenOffice. Doesn't work there.

Does the mouse method work with Open Office in 4.4?

click: Insert>"Special Character">(click on a character)

Unbelievable. It doesn't work again. No KDE app. or even OpenOffice responds to the codes. Firefox does though.
