Well, tested kdesudo dolphin just a second ago, and it works again. Dolphin launches in root mode and all places are navigable as one would expect.

Dang! Just tried it again, and I get "The processes for the file protocol died unexpectedly." error - again. So, not resolved after all. No idea why it worked last night and not now. Hmm. :P

The problem is also bugged on Launchpad several times. If you guys haven't found it already there's a workaround - I don't like it much but it works.

                  gksudo dbus-launch application-name

                    Hi,

Thanks for reporting this bug! Your bug seems to be a problem with the KDE program itself, and not with our KDE packages. But don't worry! This issue is being tracked by the KDE developers at: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165268
Once fixed in KDE, it will be included in Kubuntu once the KDE version the fix is in in reaches Kubuntu.

                    Thanks!

                    Words of power

There are more than one way to skin the Dolphin

                    [img width=400 height=199]http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/9930/sudoing.png[/img]

                    Here (Lucid - alpha3) the:
                    Code:
                    kdesudo 'dbus-launch dolphin --nofork'
                    seems to do the trick.

After the Dolphin (root-mode) has been succesfully launched once the:
                    Code:
                    kdesudo dolphin
                    is working again.

                    man dbus-launch
                    NAME
dbus-launch - Utility to start a message bus from a shell script

                    SYNOPSIS
                    dbus-launch [--version] [--sh-syntax] [--csh-syntax] [--auto-syntax] [--exit-with-session] [--autolaunch=MACHINEID] [--config- file=FILENAME] [PROGRAM] [ARGS...]

                    DESCRIPTION
The dbus-launch command is used to start a session bus instance of dbus-daemon from a shell script. It would normally be called from a user's login scripts.

                    gksu/gksudo

                    Package: gksu
                    graphical frontend to su

gksu is a Gtk+ frontend to /bin/su. It supports login shells
and preserving environment when acting as a su frontend. It
is useful to menu items or other graphical programs that need
to ask a user's password to run another program as another user.
                    non-recomends installation:
                    sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends gksu
                    ...
The following NEW packages will be installed:
                    gksu libgksu2-0 libgtop2-7 libgtop2-common

                    KDESudo vs. KDESu with sudo

                    Status quo

In KDE 3 we use a home made application called KDESudo, which enables proper sudo usage for root authentification. KDESu in 4 however does an equal good job with sudo.

                    Proposal

Instead of reinventing the wheel (i.e. port KDESudo to KDE 4) we should help KDE improve KDESu's sudo support for KDE 4.1. This would probably only be resolving some issue and adding the application icon to the password dialog.

                    > HOWTO - get kdesu back to normal in KDE4
                    Code:
                    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu /usr/bin/kdesu

Re: [RESOLVED - NOT] kdesudo - bug report filed

                        Well, I tried:
                        Code:
                        kdesudo 'dbus-launch dolphin --nofork'
and Dolphin launched correctly, and in root mode without the "The processes for the file protocol died unexpectedly." error. Closing Dolphin and the re-launching it with:
                        Code:
                        kdesudo dolphin
still results in the "The processes for the file protocol died unexpectedly." error.

At least I have a way to launch dolphin in root mode with this tip. Not a fix to the problem, but is a suitable temporary work-around.

To save typing, I copied the menu entry for Dolphin, renamed it (Dolphin - Root) and modified the Command entry with:
                            kdesudo 'dbus-launch dolphin --nofork' %i -caption "%c" %u
Saved and quit the editor. Then I added this new Dolphin menu item to my Favorites.

kdesudo is not an official KDE program, but a Kubuntu one. I suggest that you
report the bug at the proper place: https://launchpad.net/kdesudo
And then please close this bug as RESOLVED -> UPSTREAM or whatever.
