Additionally, Amarok now crashes - reliably - after playing the first track of any music CD.

    Amorak 2.* is definitely a de-evolution from the 1.4 version that we all loved. If the Amorak devs can't get the 2.2.* version working flawlessly 100% of the time, well for me, it will be the end of using Amorak. I'll uninstall it and just use VLC for my music needs. It launches reliably. It recognizes the loaded music CD reliably. And it doesn't crash.
    Yep, same here and it does seem a step backwards. >

      Well, the developers (some at least) do recognize the 'crashes' when playing music CDs. It's been reported, and assigned to phonon - not Amarok - as it is reported that phonon is actually crashing. Interestingly, they say that work is towards replacing phonon as the backend for Amarok in favor of VLC.

          Is the first version to have (amarok --help):
          Options:
          --cdplay Immediately start playing an audio cd
          and the first version to play the CD's through the device notifier/solid action (without helper scripts > Re: KDE 4.3.5 and the Device Notifier).

            Re: [RESOLVED] KDE 4.3.5 and the Device Notifier

            VLC is probably the most powerful audio & video content player, streamer, generator, converter swiss army knife in the Linux inventory of utilities. It has a great CLI presence so it is a trivial task to get a dozen webcams displaying on your screen at once! I did that one day while watching the US-Mexico boarder using the webcams the government set up down there. In one afternoon I saw dozens of folks crossing the Rio Grande at various points, and on one occasion I saw a government speed boat go screaming by. I had to use VLC because the webcam sites were Windows centric, so I captured the direct links to the webcams and bypassed their Microsoft filters designed to restrict users to Internet Exploder and Media Player. You can do that by opening the source to the webcams page, copying the link to the webcam, and pasting it into VLC. The source page looks like this:
            (Double click on Image for Full Screen View)<br><OBJECT ID='MediaPlayer' width=400 height=298 classid='CLSID:22D6F312-B0F6-11D0-94AB-0080C74C7E95' codebase='http://activex.microsoft.com/activex...ion=,1,52,701'
            standby='Loading Microsoft Windows Media Player components...' type='application/x-oleobject'>
            <PARAM name='FileName' value='http://00302597.pl.pscdn.net/003/02597/live1.asx'>
            <PARAM name='autoStart' value='True'>
            <PARAM NAME='ShowControls' VALUE='False'>
            <PARAM NAME='ShowStatusBar' VALUE='True'>
            <PARAM NAME='stretchToFit' VALUE='true'>
            <PARAM NAME='fullScreen' VALUE='false'>
            <EMBED type='application/x-mplayer2'
            pluginspage='http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/Dow.../MediaPlayer/'
            SRC='http://00302597.pl.pscdn.net/003/02597/live1.asx'
            Oh, the site for the webcams is here.

            Or, you can bypass all the registration stuff and access the cameras directly:
            http://00302597.pl.pscdn.net/003/02597/liveN.asx
            replacing N with a value from 1 to 19, the number of cameras shown onn the page listed here.

              Re: [RESOLVED] KDE 4.3.5 and the Device Notifier

              Added the ppa repository, updated the cache, and ran from the CLI:
              Code:
              sudo apt-get upgrade amarok
              Now at Amarok 2.2.2.90. Inserted a music CD, selected Play Audio CD with Amarok from the Device Notifier, and sure enough, Amarok launched and started playing the CD! Happy camper am I!!! And, Amarok didn't crash after the first track!

              Okay, it played two tracks and then crashed. I was doing something else, so maybe...

              I'll have to perform some controlled tests. But at least Amarok launches and plays a music CD from the Device Notifier now. That's a major improvement.

                So you can give the beta Amarok a thumbs up? I've tried Bangarang and like it for video but still miss Amarok for music. That last Amarok really just about did it in for me.

                  Re: [RESOLVED] KDE 4.3.5 and the Device Notifier

                  Well, without some controlled tests, all I can attest to is that with Amarok 2.3 Beta 1 "Altered State" (version 2.2.2.90), it launched and played a music CD from the Device Notifier, as Rog131 pointed out. For me, it played two tracks of music and then crashed. But as I said, I was doing something else on the system at the time, so can't be certain (yet) that that didn't contribute.

                        Well, even with the newest Amarok - 2.2.2.90 - it still crashes. This time, after the first track. Last night, it played two full tracks and crashed afterwards.
