I just did the huge update for lucid (FYI, the same kde upgrade is sitting in the staging/proposed ppas for karmic, so beware, this is not irrelevant), and it has messed up the kde desktop pretty bad. Basically everything is there, but the display doesn't work properly (no panel, no menu, etc.).
I believe there is a way to reinitialize or reset the display, without deleting .kde, which would also destroy all of the application configurations. Removing .kde/share/config/plasmarc or something like that?

With the Lucid Lynx the plasma-desktop was missing from the dependencies.

Package: plasma-desktop

This package provides a basic KDE Plasma Desktop installation.

So after the upgrade from the KDE 4.3 to the KDE 4.4 (beta1) the plasma desktop was not firing up.

Here the solution was to install the package: plasma-desktop.
Start the Konsole.
In the konsole, start the plasma desktop with the command:

plasma-desktop

The plasma desktop did start to work (panels, widgets, ...)


Reset only the plasma:

1) Stop the plasma

kquitapp plasma-desktop

2) Rename the plasma config files:

~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc
~/.kde/share/config/plasma-desktoprc
~/.kde/share/config/plasmarc

3) Restart the plasma:

plasma-desktop

This should reset the plasma-desktop to the default.

First check that package 'plasma-desktop' is installed (this is a new package, due to some kde package restructuring).

If it is installed, or installing it doesn't solve your issues, you can reset plasma settings by removing (or moving/renaming) ~/.kde/share/config/plasma* files (stop plasma first if running).

Thanks. Installing plasma-desktop got it running, though the panel seems refractory to attempts to re-arrange it. Well, at least the desktop works now.

I found the problem with the panel -- for some reason, it was trying to install a new panel over the old one. Took a while to figure that out, but once I deleted the "new" panel, all is well.

I'm not normally one to ooze praise over software upgrades, and to be sure, at this stage, there are glitches, but the new kde-4.4, and the whole lucid system, even at this point, is pretty darn sharp. Definitely don't do this for production, but if you've got the disk space and the time to play with it, it's worth a look.

I have been using an upgrade to karmic.

Edit: Yes, the live-cd for lucid-alpha-1 is there. Unfortunately, it won't boot on my system, but that is not unusual. I have not been able to get a livecd to work on my system -- ubuntu or kubuntu, 32bit or 64bit -- since Jaunty. Tried all the options under F4 and F6, no go. I get the language screen, the selection menu, then the CD spins a little, and dies with a black screen. Not a good feeling in terms of being able to rescue the system. FYI they do work in a virtual box, so the burn is OK, but that's no help as a safety net.

I made a LiveDVD and a LiveUSB of Wednesday's LiveCD ISO and LL is running acceptably well for a beta.

I'm running 4.4 beta on KK. Same thing happened. Drove me nuts wondering why I couldn't get Klipper and wicd system tray icons - they were there but in the buried panel. Only discovered it by chance

I did not to want open a new thread because my problem is very similar. I have upgraded my KDE to 4.4 RC1 after that I saw no taskbar and other stuff on desktop. I have reinstalled plasma-desktop after that everything were looks good. But when I try to change my wallpaper KDE crashing. (kedeinit error)

What are your suggestions?
