Serious problems with KDE 4.3.2. [SOLVED]

I have updated to KDE 4.3.2. on jaunty a I experience serious problems - I do not see start panel neither task bar. It appears only when I close this firefox window which BTW I can only close via File - Quit (no cross in the top right corner). I wanted to run some updates but I am not able to write anything in the adept password window - there is no reaction to any keyboard action. I wanted to run udpate via terminal - but the same issue there. Any hints ?

    Hi

Something went wrong. Most people had a tough upgrade to 4.3.0 but 4.3.2 has been solid, but hey. Can you try the fixes summarized in the first post here?

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3105560.0

To get a console, try [alt][F2] and type "konsole". If this doesn't work, just log out and login in safe mode. Or in another window manager (I always install icewm in case something like this happens).

    HTH!

I tried ALt+F2 but it would not work and neither Safe mode ! I went to System settings but I could not get out of there since there is no menu path to exit and the cross in th top right corner was not there. After the reboot I was taken right where I left - in the System settings with no option to quit or start anything else...I set Terminal to auto-start, which luckily enough is an option in System settings. After the next reboot Terminal started to recognize my keyboard and I could do update. Things are better now but the panels are just far from from working properly.

Doing upgrade to 9.10 right now...

Thanks for the tip - I think I have learned the lesson. I will try it as well.

Great. Icewm is ideal for that, it's only a couple small packages. Thanks for the update! Giving feedback is always useful to the next person landing here from a search ...

Upgrade to 9.10 did not work out for me. It was aborted for some reason by the system after installation of new packages. Now my wireless interface is not recognized anymore. I can not connect to the net via cable either. It looks like after 2 years or so I will have to reinstall the whole thing again... Quite annoying. But to an extent my fault - I should not have gone for KDE upgrade. I thought I was quite behind with at the time my existing 4.2.2. KDE version.

So, you have an ethernet connection and it is not running? Can you boot in Rescue Mode? I would:

1st. Try tu run fsck from there (or from a live cd), I wouldn;t be surprised if there was some data corruption.

2nd. Try to use the netroot option, it should get a DHCP lease from the router, that's pretty universal. Then,

              Code:
              sudo apt-get update
              sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
              sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
By the way, thank you for the positive attitude, many folks in your situation start insulting all the (thousands) people who volunteered their time to deliver this final operating system (Kubuntu).

              HTH!

Thanks for the tips. I ran fsck but I did not notice anything unusual...After I disabled proprietary Alternate Atheros "madwifi" driver, my wireless interface is back. I can now connect to the net but the connection lasts always only for a few minutes. To me it looks like as if it somehow kept loosing the assigned IP address. I remember I had the same issue when I upgraded to 9.04 but then I solved it by installing knetworkmanager instead of the default network widget. But this time knetworkmanager is not available so I am trying wicd but with same result.

Another thing - the upgrade was probably aborted due to issues with adobe-flashplugin. I had to force its removal since otherwise I could not get any other package updates.

Anyway after the removal (during the time I was connected) I was able to update the system. Apart from persisting problem of connection loss, my sound is also gone...

Re: Serious problems with KDE 4.3.2.

For wifi, maybe there is some blacklisting bothering, can you please look in here:
                  /etc/modprobe.d/

Si if some of the ath are blacklisted. This was an issue upgrading to jaunty, which supports atheros chipsets natively, but those were blacklisted in previous versions (pretty annoying, yes)

Hope this does it. For sound, there are a miriad of posts. I would look at the System Settings/Multimedia settings, play there, and also in KMix, in the Settings, enable all channels and play with them.

The good news is taht after this you''' be a veteran and pretty much anything that can happen in your machine you'll take care of

                  Cheers!

One thing that some forget, or others haven't learned about yet, are the terminals available on TTY1 - TTY6. These are accessed by CTRL-ALT-F1 for TTY1, CTRL-ALT-F2 for TTY2, etc.

I find those very helpful for getting to the command line. Especially on my sons computer since I don't have to load an entire second session to install a program or perform updates.

Sound is back - I did not realize I was still loading the old kernel. I had manually edit /boot/grub/menu.lst to add entry for the new one.

This shouldn't be necessary (I hope things are not still broken). Running "sudo update-grub" should pick up the latest kernel, otherwise. Oh well, you are done, could you please mark this thread as [SOLVED]?

One last thing with the grub - I have installed the following systems on my PC in the following order :

                          1. Kubuntu
                          2. Windows XP
                          3. Ubuntu

Menu.lst is taken from Ubuntu (presumably since this came as last). So whatever I do with this file inside Kubuntu is irrelevant for the boot. Is there a way to make system work with the Kubuntu's Menu.lst ? I use primarily Kubuntu (Ubuntu was just a try.)

Ah, that explains it. You need to boot into kubuntu and run this
                            http://linux.die.net/man/8/grub-install

                            Please see here for more

If it's only one disk and you want grub in the MBR as usual, most likely you need
                            Code:
                            sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Thanks, Imilano. Yes, I was able to reinstall the Grub following the links you have provided. But since I could not resolve the dropping wireless issue I have decided to reinstall my whole PC (XP and Kubuntu). Quite interesting, 2 years ago on this same hardware XP was working just fine and on Kubuntu it took me a lot of time to get my sound, mic and scanner working. Now, in Kubuntu sound and mic is just working out of the box, my wireless issue does not appear anymore, and the only thing I had to manually fix was scanner which took a few minutes. On my XP, on the other hand, I just can not get my sound working and I have already spent a few hours on google and installing and reinstalling drivers...
