    Oversized geometries ignored

Some windows from a remote server (connected to via ssh -X) need geometries that are slightly larger than the screen.

In older versions of KDE (I am still using 2.1.1 on some machines) the window manager tried to resize that window such that it does not overlap with the panel. By clicking that panel to the right it was possible to avoid this problem. KDE tried to resize the window a couple of times but after a sufficient number of resize requests it gave up and left the window have the size it specified with its geometry (e.g. +-12+-2).

Unfortunately this method no longer works under the current 4.3.1.

Is there some way to get geometries interpreted literally?

(The alternative seems to be a failsafe session or cygwin. Both are not very attractive.)

I asked a similar question also about GNOME and it seems to be impossible there. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1259004

Because you're seeing the same problem in both KDE and Gnome, I'm inclined to think that your solution will be found at a lower level, i.e. X. The newer versions of *buntu generate meaningless xorg.conf files. I suspect that you need a REAL (old-fashioned /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. If you have access to a machine running Hardy (or perhaps, it was Gutsy) when REAL xorg.conf files were in vogue, you can copy that file. Because the file has been modified, (I believe) it will not be changed automatically.

BUT, I'm not sure that any of this is more than a guess. I've never encountered this particular problem.

What suggests that this is an issue of KDE and GNOME only, is that you can move manually a window to the desired position! So with Shift-Mouse1 or Alt-Mouse2 you can move a window to such negative geometries. If this is possible, the other should be possible somehow as well...

Also xnest doesn't work for similar reasons.
