    I uploaded kubuntu-default-settings which sets export
    QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=raster

    Do test it out and see if it causes any problems.

    Openoffice won't start unless you set QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=native
    we'll need to patch it to do that by default

      Re: A Lighter, Faster (?) Plasma

      I've yet to try this out on my main setup, the aforementioned Nvidia TwinView bit, since I'm still on 10.04; I'm trying to figure out fixes for various problems in 10.10 on my other systems before I commit my main one to moving off the LTS. However, my circa-2006 used iMac that I use in my room which has a 24" monitor hooked up to it as well, which is CRAZY slow in KDE even with effects entirely disabled (it runs an ATI x1600 mobile), after installing kde-config-qt-graphicssystem and switching to raster things are silky smooth, way smoother than if I (*shudder*) boot into OSX.

      I still have to leave desktop effects disabled, since if I don't it tends to be just a matter of time until they bug out and start slowing the entire system down (until being disabled, upon which things speed up again; it takes a session logout to get the effects working again without slowdown, though) and, furthermore, they make it impossible to play HD video. But I wasn't really expecting KDE's desktop effects to work on an old X1600m if they don't even work reliably on my 7800GTX, heh, so it's alright.

        Re: A Lighter, Faster (?) Plasma

        Well, shifting from XRender/QT to Raster significantly speeds up KDE desktop , but unfortunately openoffice refuses to work with raster setting on both of my machines (Kubuntu MM) which have only ATI GPU and open-source radeon drivers in common (X1600 pro and an X1950XT).

          Go Native

          As said (working here):
          Openoffice won't start unless you set QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=native...
          Code:
          QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=native ooffice
          QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM=native ooffice -writer
          ...

            Shame on me! I should have read it better.

            Thank you very much for the useful instructions Rog131!
