KDE control center blew up KDE

I was in KDE control center "desktop" area trying to set up "SuperKaramba". I saw a setting I liked and set it and exited. When KDE enabled the option, both my screens went black and never recovered. Now when I turn on the computer it boots normally until KDE starts. The the screens goes white. Then blocks of the screens turn black until I have blank screens. Where does KDE store its configuration and what is a good one look like? Or is this in xorg.conf? It really looks like a KDE thing to me because both screens seem to work normally until KDE has displayed its startup sequence. Then when the wallpaper should appear is when the screens go white.

If you can (unless you are using autologin), try to login using the "fail safe" session (in the session menu on the bottom of the login screen). Then you'll get just a terminal window in which you give the command "systemsettings", and KDE control center will start so you can try to change back what you did. My guess is that you turned on a desktop effect which messed up something? So try disabling the desktop effects.

You exit the failsafe session by typing "exit" in the terminal. And remember to select the correct session ("default" or KDE) next time you login, because I think the failsafe will stick if you don't deselect it.

When choosing failsafe and logging in, I got this message

unable to launch failsafe session --- x-terminal-emulator not found; aborting

Starting another console and typing systemsettings after logging got

<unknown program name>(6624)/: KUniqueApplication : pipe closed unexpectedly.

This is a KUBUNTU 8.10 installation that has been relatively unmodified!

Logging as failsafe generated this message
"unable to launch X session --- x-terminal-emulator not found; aborting"
the computer quit responding when I clicked "OK".

I restarted and switched to another console instead of logging into KDE, typed "systemsettings" after logging in. I got this message

      <unknown program name> (6624)/: KUniqueApplication : pipe closed unexpectedly.

I noticed that when I logged in to the second console, I got two errors from kinit followed by this message

kinit: No resume image, doingf normal boot...

      HELP

Try to install xterm (apt-get install xterm), and then you'll probably be able to log in failsafe at least.
If you're trying to run systemsettings from a text-only console it won't work unfortunately, since it needs a graphical environment.

Since it was a KDE setting that you changed, probably the easiest way to reset is to go back to a default KDE desktop.

Rename the current .kde directory to something else:

          Code:
          mv .kde .kde_bak17may09
then restart your system, and a clean new .kde will be written. You will have to re-do all custom settings (except the last one).

You are exactly right! I now have a directory called "backup_of_.kde_ directory" to restore to. This will allow me to experiment safely. Thank you, thank you.thank you!!
