kde 4.2 add program to desktop or panel.

    Hey,

I would like to add a quick launch button for a program to both my desktop and a panel. Something simular to windows shortcuts. However, when I go to the k-menu, right click on a program and select either 'add to desktop' or 'add to panel', nothing happens. How can I solve this?

    Just a stupid qustion.
Do you have "widgets" (plasmoids) activated?

Check by right click on desktop and you will see a menu where you can either activate aor deactivate "widgets".

If inactive activate and try again.

    That should work.

Next, depending on if you are using the classic kmenu, the kde4 klauncher or lancelot there are different procedures.

    I hope this helps.

with a minor thread hijack --

I can add an icon to my KDE 4.2 desktop no problem. But how do I create a shortcut on the desktop, point it to an application I've written, and set the ability to run in a "terminal window". That is, have a terminal window associated with the program so the printf commands send diagnostic messages to the terminal window while it executes. I did this in 8.04, but can't find the equivalent functionality in 8.1/KDE 4.2.

I tried bending a Konsole window, but couldn't customize it since I'm not "root".

Do that in kmenu editor and then add what ever you wish to where ever you want.

        Or use krunner (at+f2)

Sorry, some stuff will just have to wait.

Done. And quite cool too. 8)

Well I cannot see any option to activate or deactive widgets.
              1. When I click on the desktop folder, I see:
Desktop options-> add widgets or lock widgets
2, When I click on my desktop outside the desktop folder I have the options "add widgets" or "lock widgets".

yet none of those widgets lets me launch a single program like a shortcut in windows would do.

                Unlock widgets.

then click and drag items out of kmenu onto the desktop.
                # make install --not-war

Then I guess your widgets are unlocked.

Now open up kmenu and drag / drop.
